CDG Nominations: The Theory of Wild Budapest Hotels of the Galaxy

The Costume Guild Nominees have been announced. It's worth noting, always, with guilds that their memberships are much broader than their correlative branch within the Academy.Neverthless they often stick closely to whichever movies are being talked up for Best Picture, regardless of their guild-specific merits.Note some of the nominations below.

Excellence in Contemporary Film
Birdman- Albert Wolsky
Boyhood- Kari Perkins
Gone Girl- Trish Summerville
Interstellar- Mary Zophres
Wild– Melissa Bruning

Albert Wolsky is a legend and Trish Summerville has been killing it lately so no complaints there. But the contemporary categories,as with all guilds, are where you can see how distracted people get with their feelings for the movie at hand and not with the [insert field].My point is this: These are five strongmoviesbut did they even consider, say,Mommy,Only Lovers Left Alive,Neighbors,Begin Again,22 Jump Street,orLucy? And if they didn't,shouldn't they have?(At least they didn't nominateSniper's fatigues orGyllenhaal'sbaggy shirts in keeping with the other guilds lockstep devotion to those pictures.)

Excellence in Period Film
The Grand Budapest Hotel- Milena Canonero
The Imitation Game- Sammy Sheldon Differ
Inherent Vice- Mark Bridges
Selma- Ruth E.Carter
The Theory of Everything- Steven Noble

No Wes Anderson film has ever been nominated for Costume Design at the Oscars (insane,亚博主页I know) and this isn't Milena Canonero's first Wes film either but will Oscar finally cave to their combined brilliance? They love Canonero otherwise, just not when she's designing for him.

Pretty strong lineup, all told. But let's shed a tear for other well costumed period films that just don't have Best Picture heat (though that should not be a demerit on their costuming achievements) or were deemed ineligible or what have you:Mr Turner,The Homesman,Pride,orA Most Violent Year.

Excellence in Fantasy Film
Guardians of the Galaxy- Alexandra Byrne
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies- Bob Buck,Lesley Burkes-Harding,Ann Maskrey
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,Part 1- Kurt and Bart
Into the Woods- Colleen Atwood
Maleficent- Anna B.Sheppard,Jane Clive

I love Kurt & Bart (though I haven't seenMockingjay) and as genius as Colleen Atwood is (she'll obviously win),doesn't anyone else feel that that awful zoot suit for Johnny Depp should subtract at least some enthusiasm from yet another award for her?I understand this lineup,to be honest, but I would like to mention in passing:Noah(read our Michael Wilkinson interview),Snowpiercer(I mean, come on.The costuming is amazing and complicated),andCaptain America: Winter Soldier.

Outstanding Contemporary Television Series
House of Cards - Johanna Argan
Ray Donovan - Christopher Lawrence
Saturday Night Live - Tom Broecker,Eric Justian
Scandal - Lyn Paolo
True Detective- Jenny Eagan

I have no preference here.Anyone?

Outstanding Period/Fantasy Television Series
Boardwalk Empire - John Dunn
Game of Thrones - Michele Clapton
The Knick - Ellen Mirojnick
Mad Men- Janie Bryant
Masters of Sex- Ane Crabtree

Janie Bryant we love you forever.Even though you never win anything for seven years of genius.

Outstanding Made for Television Movie or Mini Series
American Horror Story: Freak Show- Lou Eyrich
Houdini - Birgit Hutter
The Normal Heart- Daniel Orlandi
Olive Kitteridge - Jenny Eagan
Sherlock - Sarah Arthur

Fun line-up -- anything they missed?I think Eyrich has really outdone herself this season on American Horror Story.I think it's her best work for the show.

Excellence in Commercial Costume Design
Army ‘Defy Expectations,Villagers' - Christopher Lawrence
Direct TV ‘Less Attractive',with Rob Lowe - Mindy Le Brock,Jessica Albertson
Dos Equis ‘Most Interesting Man in the World Walks on Fire' - Julie Vogel
Kia Soul Hamster Commercial Featuring ‘Animals' - Anette Cseri
Smirnoff ‘The Mixologist' - Laura Jean Shannon

The Army's Defy Expectations series has several commercials so the one I've embedded is not the correct one (couldn't find it) but it'll give you a taste. The others are the proper commercials and costuming stars (Rob Lowe,Alison Brie,Adam Scott) apparently helps to get you noticed.

Anyway,The Film Experience is an overachiever -- we bet no other website provided this viewing for you!亚博主页Not that y'all appreciate it.*sniffle*

Nat: If Interstellar is a "contemporary",than Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Snowpiercer probably are as well.

Nathaniel - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting the commercials nominated in that category!Totally unnecessary, and I didn't even know CDG gave awards for costuming commercials, but since there are so many goddamned commercials and the names are not always perfectly descriptive,it's so good to put an image to the name.

Into the Woods was okay, but Atwood does not deserve another round of awards this year, and not just because of the Johnny Depp costume. It's mediocre and expected work that isn't distinctive or interesting in any way.I'm rooting for Milena.

Three guilds have shown support for Inherent Vice.Hopefully that translates into surprise and deserved Oscar nods for it.

Unless Sandy Powell worked under a pseudonym this year,is Colleen Atwood even allowed to win the Oscar?

Contemporary: Birdman (for Norton's briefs and shower sandals if nothing else)
Period: I don't care. All were just about perfect but I would vote GBH because it is the most fun.
Fantasy: Mockingjay. No misfires or loose ends in the design.Great attentnion to detail.
Con TV: SNL Those people do magic at the drop of a hat.Everyone else gets to think and plan.
Per TV: GoT.The costumes fit seamlessly while the others sometimes have distractions.
TV Movie/Mini: Olive. They just felt right.
Commercial: Dos Equis: Thoe DE ads are brilliant but any one of the noms is worthy.

Canonero should have this easy--what stunning work. It's been a while since she won for Chariots of Fire.

In all seriousness,though-what does Mr.Turner need to do to get some awards love? They missed with Costume and Art Direction-is (gulp) Cinematography next?!?And if Jacqueline Durran had done The Imitation Game would that be a done deal by now (considering her Keira track record)?

January 7,2015 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

@Brookesboy: But it's been just eight years since she won for Marie Antoinette!Like you,I'm rooting for her to get a fourth Oscar -- lovely, witty work.

I loved Patricia's wardrobe in The Immigrant

I love Milena Canonero and I want her to win but I fear that the Academy will go with Colleen Atwood.

Henry is probably right about SNL,but I haven't seen the show in years,so I'm rooting for House of Cards solely because of Claire's wonderful monochromatic wardrobe.

Do hamster heads and hands fall under hair and make up or wardrobe? If wardrobe, then the work is stunning, look at those shoes! And who knew that male hamsters were so chubby in relation to their female counterparts.
Dos Equis work is sublime, from Polynesia to the arctic to construction workers atop a skyscraper and to whatever that world is where the most interesting man in the world currently lives (frankly I wish I knew that world).

@Guy: I didn't realize she did MA,or had a third Oscar! Thanks for the info. She really is a great artist.I love her work on Godfather 3.

For TV,we binge watched a season of Suits and gasped in delight at each new costume of Gina Torres. The other characters also had great outfits, but Gina makes each outfit look like Richard Avedon is shooting her for classic Vogue.

In movies, although I haven't seen it yet,I fell in love with the summer 1960s linens with the Greek backdrop in Two Faces of January.Apparently Viggo Mortenson's linen suit gets quite a workout during the course of the movie, which means they must have had a series of suits artfully distressed to match the characters difficulties?

January 7,2015 | Unregistered Commenteradri

Those contemporary nominees are so "blah."I would have suggested The Hundred-Foot Journey (for anything Helen Mirren wore),Love is Strange (for the wedding outfits),Begin Again (for high waisted pants and slouchy suits)...

Unfortunately,by California State Law,only twenty films can be in the Oscar conversation at any one time so those movies had to go.

January 7,2015 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

I liked Johnny Depp's zoot suit in Into the Woods.I thought it fit the character well and, thanks to the reordered first act, made it clear that this was a fantasy piece. The humanized wolf dressed like the cartoon wolves howling at the showgirl created the necessary suspension of disbelief to buy into everything from the witch's transformation to the destruction of the giant's wife.
