Beauty vs Beast: Audrey in the Middle

Jason fromMNPPhere with this week's "Beauty vs Beast"-- you're probably vividly aware at this point that this month's Supporting Actress Smackdown is tackling the ladies of 1954,especially since just the other day the Smackdownerslisted some of their favorite thingsabout that year. And what a year it was!I was pretty tempted to give this week's contest over to my favorite movie of all-timeRear Window(it's in a lifelong dead heat withRosemary's Babyfor that mantle, actually) but...well that's awfully expected of me.How many of these posts have I already dedicated to Hitchcock movies?

So I looked a smidge deeper and found a perfectly pleasant second pick -- after all,who wouldn't want to put themselves in Audrey Hepburn's designer shoes for a moment?Sabrinait is!Make like you're Billy Wilder's leading lady and choose -- Bogart's puppy-eyed businessman or Holden's suave playboy?

PREVIOUSLYLast weekwe brought it on withthe rival cheerleading squads ofBring It On-- but who brought it bigger in the end?In a reversal of the movie's well-reason donouement we've handed our trophy to the loveable cheaters the Rancho Carne Toros! The curse of the dropped spirit stick is broken!SaidJonn:

"Team Jesse Bradford brushing his teeth isn't an option?!"

They both have good and bad points but since one of them is William Holden near his dreamiest it became a clear choice.

All William Holden, all the time.Who else can sit down on champagne glasses with such aplomb?

When I was younger I used to think it was part of his characterization. As much as I do like Bogart,he always looks vaguely uncomfortable throughout this movie.

Bill Holden,clearly-he was far more romantic, and if I'm Audrey Hepburn,I don't need to settle for a stoic Bogie.

Also, how do you expect me to get anything done with that Jesse Bradford gif staring at me?Playing unfair Jason, playing unfair.

Team David, both because he's impossibly handsome, and MUCH more age appropriate.Bogart was 30 years older than Hepburn (and 25 years older than Bacall) so,uh,that always bothered me even though I loved this movie.

An off-beat role for Bogie, though from what I've read,he didn't feel in-sync with Billy Wilder or Audrey.Holden,on the other hand, adored both of them, and perhaps it shows?Team Bill!

No Mark, you really can't.You may unfortnately be the only person who liked any part of the remake. It was well cast,Julia Ormand was beautiful.............but it just wasn't.........Wilder.

This just ain't a fair fight.Look at that pic of Bill! It's like he was sent down from heaven and anointed with angel tears.

As an aside,I just cannot believe what years both Holden and Bogart had in 1954.Besides this classic,Bogart was in The Caine Mutiny,The Barefoot Contessa and Beat the Devil.Bill also had Executive Suite,The Country Girl and The Bridges at Toko-Ri.Dayum.

I've seen Sabrina a number of times, and adore Audrey and the costumes.

But I recently saw it with a teenager, and that was an eye opener.I always thought that "Linus or David"was a fair question, but she scoffed at David from the beginning. She said he was spoiled, shallow, and selfish, and had no patience with Audrey's obsession with him.No girl should spend time obsessing over a guy.

I listened and thought "hey, girls are better than ever".

Ps.To her, both guys were the same age.Old.Sneers when David jumped into his convertible as if he was young.Costumes were a big hit, though.

Bogie is too old & haggard to be Linus!!He looked more like Sabrina's father than suitor.Lol.It wld have been perfect if Cary Grant (Wilder's 1st choice) accepted the role...

1995 remake is nowhere as charming or delightful as the original...more than Roman Holiday, this is the pic that lauched Audrey as the tres-chic gamine & the ultimate fashion icon!!!
