Is this the death knell for Arrival and Jackie beyond Actress?Say it isn't so...

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterTom M

I was sort of expecting Sully to get shut out.Did not expect Deadpool to do as well as it did.Simon Helberg and Aaron Taylor Johnson surprise me.Jonah Hill always seems to grab unexpected nominations.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterReady

First of all,boo for Tom Ford and Aaron-Taylor Johnson..I mean *eew*.ATJ and not Shannon???Dafuq?Chastain was a surprise, but could this just be the Globes tossing a bone?Happy for Steinfeld,I just watched her in Edge Of Seventeen last night and she was brilliant, was not expecting that.Inspired choices with Mortensen and Farrell, the latter of whom I was afraid would get totally ignored.Kidman feels like a default pick, why no Gerwig? Also,I think Portman's got this.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Buffamonteezi

Shockin omission: Hanks for Sully n Scorsese for Silence.N i thot the globes luv them?!

Even worse,no nom for Love n Friendship! Not even Beckingsale!

Surprise on the luv showered on Norturnal Animals n Hacksaw

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

@Amanda Buffamonteezi

Dafuq indeed.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterDevin D

Just a heads up that Mahershala Ali's name is consistently misspelled ("Mahershara") on this site!

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterNick

Too much Gibson for an over rated blood bath, and a terrible performance by Andrew Garfield. That accent is up there with Julia Roberts in "Mary Reilly."

Too bad Ralph Fiennes continues be to forgotten for his brilliant performance.

I still think Ben Foster will get an Oscar nod.

And where the hell is "Hail Caesar!"?

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Yay fo Simon Helberg and Hugh Grant and no Sully

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterken s

There were two open spots in the director line-up,and HFPA gave them to Ford and Gibson.

Well,DGA can't do any worse.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I'm curious what this means for Supporting Actor.Taylor-Johnson and Helberg both seem very vulnerable in terms of Oscar, though theoretically could make it,but will Grant now lose votes with a legitimate contender in supporting from the same movie and category confusion, and can Michael Shannon get in when he also has a costar that is competing for votes (it's happened that someone gets in for the Globes and someone else from the same film gets in in the same category for Oscar-Paul Scofield & John Turturro come to mind-but it's rare)?Lucas Hedges,in my opinion, might be the best positioned person not nominated today for Oscar-he's not famous,so the Globes were always going to be harder for him,but Manchester clearly has boffo support, which could help with Oscar.

I also think Neeson is theoretically possible, but that's without seeing Silence-I don't understand what the holdup is there-is he not any good in it or is it just a small part?

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

So thankful that Sing Street got a Best Comedy nom,but how on earth was it shut out in Original Song?
Also Arrival/Jackie's snubs are shocking.I don't get all the love for Hacksaw Ridge.Simon Helberg and Jonah Hill are just huge whyyyysss for me.

And then Deadpool.
DEADPOOL.Whyyyyyyyy.The Deadpool slot would much better serve The Lobster,Don't Think Twice,Love and Friendship or even Hail Caesar and A Bigger Splash.Or The Edge of 17.

Oh and YAY for La La Land and Moonlight.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterchasm301

I would not be surprised in the least if Helberg were to sneak in as supporting actor forFlorence Foster Jenkins, especially if either Streep or Grant (or both) make the cut in the lead categories.

Finally having seenManchester by the Sea,I'm already over its representation among these awards citations.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

@John T

With regards to Neeson, its a small part (like the 4th or 5th biggest supporting role) and he's only in a few scenes towards the end.His character is important to the plot in that Garfield/Driver are motivated to go to Japan in order to find him,but the role itself isn't that big.Think Col.Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (at least in terms of screentime).

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterchasgoose

Definitely happy for Simon Helberg. He's the soul of Florence Foster Jenkins similar to the way Amy Adams is the soul of Doubt.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Jonah Hill. That is the worst of the worst.Damn.So lazy.
Ferdia Walsh-Peelo,Sam Neill,Julian Dennison,RALPH FIENNES...all would have been excellent nominations.Hell, give Ryan Gosling a second nomination in the category.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJB

For the first time in awhile,I'm differing on Nocturnal Animals from you!I love it so much. But I highly doubt it will go beyond this...I did think Aaron shined more than Michael,so I was pleased with his nom.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Yay!Meryl,Hugh and Simon. Those banner ads on your page really paid off.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJono

Gibson and Ford are great choices (this year - I'm not the fan of Gibson but "Hacksaw Ridge"is his best movie and it was very well directed - and "Nocturnal Animals"is one of the best movies of the year so...yeah!).
Taylor-Johnson should be nominated with Shannon. Both were awesome.
Helberg and Grant - yeah!
Farrell - even better!
"Hell or High Water"everywhere -> awesome!

Said things: why Adams is nominated for her worse performance? She should be here for "Nocturnal Animals".Where is music from "NA"and Gyllenhaal for the same movie?Hill and Reynolds nominated over George Clooney in "Hail,Caesar!"?And what about this Coen brothers' movie? Why "The Lobster"got only one nomination?

No love for "Arrival"(except Adam's performance and music) - the most overrated movie of the year -> yeah!

Overall: quite good nominations. They could have been better but are acceptable.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterSomeone

WINONA RYDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Deadpool,yeah.Love it

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

Aw,no Sally Field.Boo.

Happy that Negga and Edgerton can get recognized for such sublte,un-showy performances.

How is Mandy Moore up for supporting?Isn't she the lead on that show?(Never seen it so I might be wrong.)

And Thandie Newton!Yesssssssssssss.

I'm thinking Issa Rae will be the next recipient in the GG's "hot young female comedy lead"tradition. And she's good, but Bloom is just nailing "CEG"'s second season.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

Chasgoose-Thanks for the clarification.I'd been confused because Marty's great with getting Supporting Actor nods, and Neeson is exactly in the right position in his career to get a second nomination (and maybe even a trophy) so I was stunned it wasn't getting more attention.Brando/Apocalypse Now makes sense as to why it's not mentioned.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

Here to show my boy Jonah some love seeing as no-one else on here seems to rate him.Made up with his nomination. He slayed in WAR DOGS,he deserves a nomination for his unsettling giggle alone.

Other surprises I'm very pleased about are ATJ nominated for NOCTURNAL ANIMALS instead of Shannon.I think NOCTURNAL ANIMALS might be ATJ's best performance of his career and he genuinely scared the crap out of me.

Also echo all the love for Hailee's witty, layered performance in EDGE OF SEVENTEEN.I've been listening to her songs like crazy recently so my love for her is high.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

As much as I love Winona, she is not that great on that show

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterWhat what

I know everyone here is reacting to the "unpleasant"surprises but the great thing about the Globes is that they make the Oscars slightly less easy to predict: And it terms of the surprise factor,亚博主页rather than punditry, that's great.

Delighted for: Negga and Edgerton.

Huppert,obviously.LET'S GET THAT OSCAR NOM!

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterSeán

I'm a terrible person, but right now I desperately want Taylor-Johnson to get nominated just to see his ass-wiping scene turned into an Oscar clip.Très chic!

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Peggy Sue: LOL that scene made me cringe

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

I'm happy about Olivia Coleman for The Lobster. No chance of winning but who cares - I just love that nomination.Ditto Hugh Grant & Sing Street.
That line up for best comedy/musical actress is stellar.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

There is actually ALOT of pleasant inclusions here too.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterWhat what

I really don't want to see Lion.Looks awful.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Sing Street gets a nomination for Comedy/Musical but not for Best Song?!?

That Deadpool nomination just made me snort my coffee through my nose.I actually kind of love it.

BOO to the Viola Davis category fraud.I don't care if she's deserving

BOO to the lack of love for Love & Friendship.

BOO to that Jonah Hill nom. Please replace with Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys.

YAY for Isabelle Huppert!YAY for Moonlight love!YAY for La La Land love!YAY for Chastain!

And YAY for Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell!!

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterDancin' Dan

"I'm happy about Olivia Coleman for The Lobster."Don't be,it didn't happen.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJJ

My thoughts? The TV nominations were much more exciting than film.(YAY for Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. And Winona Forever!)

Of course two of the year's best films with women at the center (Arrival and Jackie),were ignored for best picture drama. That's a lot of male-heavy drama in that category.Shame, since last year at least they nominated Carol for this prize.

HFPA must not have seen Silence. They usually go wild for Scorsese.Completely shut-out.

Kind of surprised Chastain made it for Best Actress - Drama.HFPA seemed to like Hidden Figures,so I thought Taraji would make it there.Regardless, that's the strongest category IMO.

I think that supporting actress line-up is happening for Oscar. Not confident that Gerwig is going to make it this year.

Of course in the year of Trump,Mel Gibson would have his "resurgence".Just GAG.I hope Oscar does better with that best director category.Throw a bone to Larrain or Villeneuve or someone!

I think La La Land is going to soar through this awards season.

PS,did anyone find it funny/awkward Laura Dern announcing Billy Bob Thornton's nomination?

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

I'm loving the love for Ryan Reynolds.Marvel must be scratching their heads, they're finally getting some awards love!

Also, very excited that Isabelle Huppert is now pretty much a lock, right??

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJB

After being underwhelmed by both Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea,this year looks like it's La La Land's to lose,as far as I'm concerned.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterken s

@JB: I doubt Marvel Studios is thrilled at the love for a FOX Marvel film.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterSean C.

@ken s yea it's definitely la la land's to lose since you were underwhelmed by both moonlight and manchester by the sea.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterjulio

Not a huge fan of Stranger Things, but Winona is the best part!Carla Gugino is the second best!

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

That Aaron Taylor-Johnson nomination is laughable.

Glad for Simon Helberg.I thought he was MVP in FFJ.

The Andrew Garfield nomination concerns me.I love him normally, but he's so bad in HR.It's not a very good movie. He has done much better work.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

Looks like Streep may be in Best Actress Oscar race after all.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

The support for Nocturnal Emissions is disgusting.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Wouldn't it be great if Grant was nominated as lead at Oscar.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

The TV Comedy Actress and both TV supporting categories are going to a bloodbath. There will be tears and much gnashing of teeth come awards night.

@ DJDeeJay: You could say they are all lead or supporting onThis Is Us,including both Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz.

@ Marsha Mason: Carla Gugino?Do you mean Cara Buono?

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Yes I do,Paul.Thx

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

markgordon: Yes

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterken s

A moment of silence for...er,Silence.

And now is as good a time to ask as any: RememberCollateral Beauty?

Missing in action: Michael Keaton.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

My only hurt: the desdain for Love & Friendship.I don't care about Nocturnal Animals or Mel Gibson.Kudos to the HPFA for going to their guts, although we dint't like it.Shepherd mentality is the worst.LLL,Moonlight and Manchester aside,BAFCA is the worst.I will be very, very happy if they're BOLD enough to go behind Huppert and don't regret they're collective un-love for Jackie by giving Portman the Globe! It's a toss-up between them in that category.Giving Portman the award would be the most oscary thing they could do (dicard Portman at the Oscars at your own peril!).亚博主页Hope they have the "Nocturnal Animals"epiphany, here:) Tom Ford is a pretentious bore.So are the precursors and the "likely wins".This is Huppert last chance to win in a major event before the big thing.A winning here could serve as a much needed curveball to the Oscars.亚博主页Stone vs Portman's names seem to be engraved for the win.Huppert needs this award to complicate things,.And she's the most deserved of them all, frankly.Live with it.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered Commenterchofer

- The Tv Drama line up is full of my 2016 favs :)

- is Olivia Coleman nominated for The Night Manager?

- So much Aussie love - Lion,Hacksaw Ridge,Nic,Joel,Mel.Yes we will claim Mel.He's like the bad boy who has come home asking for forgiveness. His interviews around Hacksaw Ridge have been humble and appreciative of Australia's film industry.Personally I don't know if I can forgive his behaviour and I'm not really keen to see Hacksaw Ridge, but if he is willing to give work to Aussies and support the Australian film industry then I'm happy for his film to be receiving accolades. He needs to stay and make an Aussie story though then his redemption may ring true for me.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

@ Joanne: Yes,notFleabag.

December 12,2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Yes,Joanne,I too, will struggle to forgive Gibson for his bigotry against Jews and African-Americans until he's given jobs to Aussies and helped us Aussies cope with our inferiority complex by making a true-blue Aussie story and letting us vicariously bask in his Hollywood celebrity.Because those things are totally related to each other.
