"Get Out"and "Lady Bird"Lead Gotham Nominations

Awards season has begun! The first of the Oscar precursors, the Gotham Awards, has announced their nominations this morning. The Gothams are dedicated to honor the best of independent film during the last year.Their well-curated committees of film critics and movie insiders that pick the nominees result in refreshing choices that many times miss the bigger awards.Despite that, for the past three years,Gotham winners for Best Feature have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars.亚博主页

The Gotham Awards will be hosted by John Cameron Mitchell on November 27th.This year's ceremony will also award special tributes to Sofia Coppola (The Beguiled),Nicole Kidman (The Killing of a Sacred Deer,The Beguiled),Dustin Hoffman (The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)),Jason Blum (Get Out),Ed Lachman (Wonderstruck),and Al Gore (An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power).

all i know is i shall never trust any of the jury again as critics.I realize I hate I TONYA to an almost absurd level and maybe it's merely mediocre,But i am legit embarrassed by people that pretend it's a good i'm looking at you Gotham Jury: Eric Kohn,David Ehrlich,Liz Shannon Miller,Jude Dry,and whoever else was responsible.

I'm rooting for I Tonya cause I love Margot.I think she can be the female Dicaprio in terms of career path.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterTr

@Nathaniel R

Do you really want to discourage Allison Janney's path to a freshman nomination?

October 19,2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

The trailer put me off with that false head on bodies thing, like when me and my sister used to swap Barbies heads,it never looks right.

I know people are high on Janney but is her role just a caricature or is there more.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Watching James Franco's performance back to back with Tommy Wiseau's "performance"in "The Room"proved how much he deserves that nomination.

Please let "Get Out"take this all the way to a Best Picture nomination.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

I would be so happy if these were the Oscar nominations.I know they won't be,but damn, what a line up.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

Hawkins and Mcdormand were robbed !!!!

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterAmazingAmy

Were Hawkins and McDormand eligible for the Gothams? If it's like the Indie Spirits, perhaps the budget of those films was too high?(Although I can't imagine McDormand's film cost *that* much.)

Anyway,it's so strange that Lady Bird racked up so many nominations but not one for Best Picture (and ignominiously at the sake of I,Tonya—oof!).

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

I'm really happy that Get Out did so well,it reminds me of Moonlight's early success.

What's going on with The Shape of Water? When it premiered at Venice,it got glowing reviews but since then it didn't crack top 3 at Tiff's People Choice Awrds and now it gets snubbed here.I guess it isn't connecting with people like I thought.

Why didn't Betty Gabriel get a breakthrough actor nod?

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Jess: Well,1.TIFF's People's Choice Award has only rarely gone (twice,in their entire history) to something truly "genre"and 2.It hasn't officially been confirmed what the budget even is for The Shape of Water.Gotham and Indie Spirit generally both seem to operate in the $20 or $25 million or less as loosely "indie"space, even if that's to make them look better more than anything. And,since it's Del Toro,I would not be surprised if the final budget was quite a bit more than that.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Erik Anderson (AwardsWatch) confirmed Shape of Water was eligible. The jury didn't go for it.Not even a nod for Hawkins surprised me.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterJess

McDormand's movie was ineligible because her director and producer are foreign. You need at least one American in either position. The Shape of Water was eligible but disliked by the committee.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Heavenly Creature and Friend of TFE Melanie Lynskey gets a nomination!!!WOO HOO!!

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterDancin' Dan

Is Margot Robbie best actress happening?

Maybe Hawkins isn't the frontrunner.

Or a second oscar for McDormand to recognize Three Billboards.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph

Get Out is the new Moonlight?

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterGiovanni

I do think Robbie will end up being a possible contender in Best Actress. It does seem as if the final 5 is starting to take shape, but no one still knows anything about The Post yet with regards to Streep.Very surprised the Gothams did not go for The Shape of Water.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterRobert J.

I still feel BA is wide open, all you need is love and your in.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

This was huge for Robbie.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

This was huge for Robbie.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

This was huge for Robbie.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

I think this matters as much for Robbie as it does for Haley Lu Richardson or Lois Smith,i.e.,not much. These nominations seem like they're way too early to have any influence.Yes,they've predicted a Best Picture winner twice now,but that's a lucky coincidence borne of the fact that both of those films were insanely well-liked indies.

Also, the I,Tonya trailer is terrible (and that's coming from someone who was really intrigued by the concept previously).

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I was wondering what film would cop Nat's irrational dislike this year :D

October 19,2017 | Unregistered Commentermorgan

I just hope that doesn't mean "Get Out"will get anything more than a screenplay nomination at the Oscars.亚博主页For me,the idea is great but the execution is average. It's just shot like any other commetcial thriller.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterDg

I actually think the I,Tonya trailer is brilliant as it takes an 80s/90s biopic about a figure who's mostly irrelevant today and connects it to our current era of truthiness.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterTr

Dg: Cult of Chucky is the year's best horror film. Not quite the best film in the series (that'd still be Bride),but a very close second. After Curse and Cult back to back, the next Chucky movie better be heading back to theatres.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

First 2x-Hollywood Film Award honoree, how 1x-Gotham winner (in Ensemble) and 1x-Gotham nominee (Breakthrough Performance) Mary J.Blige!Next up the Golden Globes, and the Oscar!

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge P.

These are always fun,but it's impossible to use them as a precursor. The nominations themselves come from groups of 4-6 critics,so it just takes one person to give a bad score to Sally Hawkins to DQ her since they're 20% of the nominations body. Also, there are a few groups that vote in different categories,so the people who vote for Actor and Actress aren't the same people who vote to nominate Picture, which can make these nominations look disjointed.I'm not sure how they're totally divided, but to see a film like Get Out do well across the board does suggest support, obviously, among different groups (which are small,to be fair, again, but hey, still different).

Winners are voted on by new groups specific to each category,so they theoretically can be totally wild and independent.I remember Neve Campbell was in one last year (they said who voted in each group before announcing the award at the show, which was streamed).

Always fun,and I do like that they have a platform that can help a longshot get some spotlight onto their campaign (Get Out,Floirda Project),but Gothams nominations and voting systems are so weird that it's hard to use them as a reliable precursor when they're really just a profile boost.

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterMark

Not to be a jerk, but isn't I DON'T FEEL AT HOME...technically a TV movie now since it never even had a qualifying theatrical run?Did it qualify for these awards just by having a festival premiere?

October 19,2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

Get Out is a fine movie, but since it's a comedy and a horror movie,we shouldn't get our hopes up about Oscar going for it.

October 20,2017 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

i wish to 'get out' the same thing i've whished to 'deadpool' on the oscars this year:亚博主页

Is what 'get out' deserves!

a piece of great ideia who results in a shit movie that critics are saying been awesome and remarkable.are you all insane?

October 20,2017 | Unregistered Commenterjon

Jon I completely agree. To my mind Get Out is not a good film, and I chalk that up to the uneven tone and terrible ending.I think the premise is great and I will credit its cast for all round top-notch work.Above average at best though.

October 21,2017 | Unregistered CommenterBillyBob

Knock it off aboutGet Out.You all know better.

October 22,2017 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

Loved this movie.Such a great directorial debut.I definitely need to watch more stuff with or written by Greta Gerwig though.House of the Devil is the first thing I saw her in.Despite her small role,I was a huge fan after that.Frances Ha is only other I've seen.
