by Nathaniel R

the oldest and youngest nominee flanking the big winner: Lois Smith,Jordan Peele, and Brooklynn Prince

Get Out(with 3 wins) andCall Me By Your Name(with 2 including Best Feature) dominated the Gotham Awards last night taking the bulk of the prizes. That didn't leave much for other contenders though A24 moviesThe Disaster ArtistandLady Birdscored both leading acting awards.Entirely shut out despite multiple nominations:The Florida Project,Good Time, andI Tonya.More after the jump...

Eternally boyish awesome 54 year old auteur John Cameron Mitchell hosted the event -- look at that sharp suit! Now can they please release his latest filmHow To Talk to Girls at Parties? Everything he's made to date has been brilliant (Hedwig and the Angry Inch,Shortbus,Rabbit Hole) so why make us wait?!

The night also included tributes to Al Gore,Sofia Coppola,Dustin Hoffman,Jason Blum,Ed Lachmann, and Nicole Kidman which might explain why it ran longer than some Oscar ceremonies at 3 hours plus.During the Kidman tribute Reese Witherspoon reportedly called the event "the independent spirits"from the podium, getting the event wrong.West Coast vs East Coast, hee! But that also is a long show, come to think of it.

What do you make of these prizes?Meaningless in the grand scheme of things or a sign of things to come on Oscar night?

Team Ronan.3rd nod 1st win.Alright with me.

I have this sneaky suspicion that Saoirse Ronan could win Best Actress. She's a previously nominated ingenue in a film everyone loves and gives a livewire performance which is one type they like to reward.

Kind of helps Chalamet and Ronan,REALLY helps Franco, who probably has the Globe locked up now as well. The second Ensemble trophy for Mudbound means we shouldn't be too surprised if it gets two supporting nominations.Morgan and Blige for both quality AND the "His and Hers"narrative factor would be the best result.

Drama Lead Actor Globe:

Gary Oldman,Darkest Hour
Tom Hanks,The Post
Daniel Day-Lewis,Phantom Thread
Jake Gyllenhaal,Stronger
Denzel Washington,Roman Israel Esq.or Steve Carell,Last Flag Flying (Even if Oscar probably DOES go for him and Globe goes for Call Me By Your Name in PICTURE,Globe is NEVER going to for Chalamet in acting.)

Mus/Com Lead Actor Globe:

James Franco,The Disaster Artist
Daniel Kaaluya,Get Out
Hugh Jackman,The Greatest Showman
Adam Sandler,The Meyerowitz Stories,New and Selected
Matt Damon,Downsizing (Put the shame meter all the way to infinity, because Golden Globe don't care about your racism accusations if they can star-bleep!)

It would be awesome if Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan are both crowned best actor and actress. Here come the young folks!

Hi,Nathaniel.Jonathan here - former film critic for 18 years, and one of the S.A.G.nominators for 2017.I have seen Call Me By Your Name FOUR times already, and I wanted to let you know that your assessment of Armie Hammer's Oliver as a Leading Role (and possible category fraud) is just plain wrong. The entire film is told from the perspective of Elio (as is the book).Timothée Chalamet is the first person you see in the film and he's the last you see.Armie Hammer arrives a couple minutes from the beginning but exits a full 10 minutes before the end.Hammer only has one scene with Michael Stuhlbarg that doesn't have Chalamet in it (the projected slides scene),and you never see his character Oliver in a private scene with interested girl Chiara. In fact,Armie Hammer is off-screen for a full 40 minutes during the 2 hour,13 minute film, while Chalamet is clearly onscreen almost non-stop.There is NO category fraud in placing Armie Hammer where he belongs - in Best Supporting Actor - as he clearly supports the lead character of Elio. All this nonsense speculation about category fraud can only cause confusion among voters and potentially jeopardize Chalamet's almost assured Best Actor nomination. It would be such a crime to see Hammer discussed as a Best Actor nominee, when he clearly has only a fraction of Chalamet's screen time.

November 28,2017 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan Lewis

I think Armie Hammer's role is in the gray area.I agree with Jonathan that Elio is clearly lead and Oliver is less of a lead but still a major character.Armie Hammer is credited first though,so every indication is that he is a lead. However,if we apply the top/bottom rule, which is difficult with the film since we don't see them have sex,Oliver is the top per the book so he should be lead and Elio is supporting. At least we don't have a case where producers are trying to claim Timothee Chalamet as supporting because of his age.

November 28,2017 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

I stated in a previous post that I think Hammer's role can be justified in either category. The more I think about it,the more I think he is a lead.Elio is definitely the main character, definitely the main lead (I think it would be downright absurd to argue that Chalamet is supporting, for any reason whatsoever,as Elio is such an enormous role),but I think that OIliver is significant enough that he should probably be in Leading too - for the same reason that I think, for example, that Nurse Ratched is a lead in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest even though McMurphy is clearly the main character.

That said,I wouldn't mind if Hammer were to crop up in Supporting,as I do think the role can be justified there.

Happy for the Gotham winners!

The only things holding me back from saying she could win and on her 3rd so young, what a talent,
could winning too young put future wins in jeopardy or even nomination, you know how Oscar takes breaks and sometimes never goes back to the well for some Susan Sarandon immediately sprung to mind, unless she Ronan the new Winslet.

November 28,2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Ronan is soooooo gorgeous in tt Rodarte dress!!!

So happy for her!!!...I tink she's firmly 2nd or 3rd place now, inching closer to the top spot!

Note: Just checked to see if the Gotham and the Indie Spirit usually have the same person WIN.Of the four times (2013-now) that the Gothams HAVE given a Lead Actor prize,3 of those four times, the Indie Spirit winner matches. So,yeah,I think we have to start looking at James Franco as likely.Aron Rolston and Tommy Wiseau.Quite the mismatched pair of nominations.
