On This Day: Globes for two goddesses.Plus a non-jolly green giant

On this day in history as it relates to showbiz...

1892One of Old Hollywood's most undersung but talented 1930s directors Gregory La Cava is born.Classics includeStage DoorandMy Man Godfrey
1913
Famed abolitionist and American hero Harriet Tubman dies of pneumonia. So glad she's getting biopic treatment soon. And twice over!
1938
The 10th annual Oscars are held with亚博主页The Life of Emile Zzzzzolawinning Best Picture and Louise Rainer taking her consecutive Best Actress prize but the most enduring anecdote was of coursethe theft of Alice Brady's Oscar forIn Old Chicago.
1958Sharon Stone is born in Pennysylvania

The 1959 Golden Globes (and more) are after the jump...

1960The Golden Globes of 1959 are held (though it should be noted that there are conflicting reports and some say it was March 8th).Some Like it Hotwas the big winner taking three prizes: Comedy Picture,Comedy Actor (Jack Lemmon),and Comedy Actress (Marilyn Monroe).Elizabeth Taylor won in Drama forSuddenly Last Summer;huge fan of that performance,I am!You?

Was 1959 the peak of Liz's beauty? You be the judge...

Here she is in 1959 at some glamorous event.Or possibly just a Tuesday night, who knows with Liz!

Curiously NONE of the Globe acting winners that year went on to win Oscars.亚博主页It should also be mentioned thatBen-Hurwas a big winner in Drama.Supporting Actor went to Stephen Boyd for his delicious turn as homoerotic Messala. He wasn't nominated for the Oscar but his non-Globe nominated costar Hugh Griffith was...and won.1959 is one early example of the Globes being more insightful than the Oscars ...亚博主页which happens occassionally and which they almost never get any credit for, probably because they make inexplicable or questionably motivated decisions just as often.

1962Actress Jasmine Guy is born
1971Jon Hamm is born in St Louis
1978"The Incredible Hulk"premieres on TV with Bill Bixby as Bruce Banner. You wouldn't like him when he's angry and becomes Lou Ferigno, painted green.
1982Silicon Valleystar Thomas Middleditch is born
1983Rafe Spall is born. He's the son of Timothy Spall which is always so hard to remember -- probably due to the slimming down and muscling up.
1984Olivia Wilde is born
1997Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of the greatest things that ever existed, premiered on TV.Happy 20th Buffyverse!
2017Kong: Skull Islandopening weekend. It's actually the 8th King Kong movie though only really a few of them are famous. Also opening today the adaptation of Julian Barnes novelThe Sense of an Endingand the second mesmerizing Kirsten Stewart / Olivier Assayas collaboration,Personal Shopper.

P.S.have you seen Kristen Stewart's new haircut she wore to the premiere.Wowza!

Curious that you would mention two supporting actors from Ben-Hur,but not Sam Jaffe, who was born on March 10,1891.

Two more notables: Oscar oddity Barry Fitzgerald (1888) and Katie Hepburn's on-screen daughter and real-life niece Katharine Houghton (1945).

Wait,Rafe Spall is Timothy Spall's son?!How come I didn't know that? That may be weirder than the Skargsard family.

Gregory La Cava is great. He had a talent for getting fresh performances from actors.I love "Stage Door"--the comedy holds up beautifully after 80 years.

I was watching Taylor and Burton in "The VIPs"on TCM a really fun movie filled with stars including Orson Welles as movie producer,Louis Jourdan as gigolo and the very hot Rod Taylor.Liz looks ravishing

The redeeming factor of the Globes is,that they DID award Marilyn Monroe, and in one of her most iconic peformances...it's heartbreaking to know that the biggest screen icon - and a great actress, specially in comedy - died without even a nomination at the Oscars...亚博主页I mean, not for "Bus Stop","Some Like it Hot"or "The Misfits"...one can't help but wondering how long would have taken the AMPAS to finally recognise her,if she didn't die so young.

Liz 's beauty was foremost in the 50',s and ,60's.I thought she was the most beautiful in the movie "Elephant Walk.

that you didn't title this "i'll show you a [winning] pair of golden globes"disappoints me a little

spooky how our once fave tv show premiered on the birthday of the man who would star in its successor

@Jesus Alonso

No one then knew Monroe would transcend the stars of the era to become a continued cultural icon.It is something many cannot foresee because we only comprehend the now and before.

March 11,2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

I bet Sharon Stone's birthday parties are fucking wild.

March 11,2017 | Unregistered CommenterEz

I'm partial to Taylor's gorgeousness inA Place in the SunandGiant.

Jaragon: you are so right about Rod Taylor.Though his looks didn't last he was so sexy from the late 50's-late 60's.
