8月的图片轮盘:唱!3月,瑞秋ried, etc...

You know the drill. Here's all the new stuff on the major streaming services with a handful plus of random titles freeze-framed (whatever came up when we messed with the viewing bar, no fudging). What will you be watching this month and which movies would you love to see covered in depth?

The lists and screengrabs are after the jump.

-None of them have seen me since I got my nose job.

- You had a deviated septum. You were snoring like crazy, it was a medical issue.Besides you look exactly the same to me!

Wait what?Oh haha. They replaced Bradley Cooper with Adam Scott?Okay then. But still sad because as much as we adore Adam Scott, that was one of Bradley Cooper's greatest performances.

[Faux nervous giggling to Edwin McCain's "I'll Be"]

No Sandy Powell costumes? No thank you!

[P.S.Since this is a Hilary Duff movie this is as good a time as any to remind you that you should be watchingYoungerwhich is one of the most enjoyable series on television and which has never been nominated for even 1 Emmy despite being amply worthy inat least three categories each year: Best Actress, Best Comedy Series, and Best Costume Design]

[lipsynching to "Call Me Maybe"]

That song is still A+++.I know this movie got surprisingly strong reviews but I remain in mortal fear of it.It just seems so cynical.'You know what the kids and tweens like?Funny animals and teenage pop!Let's greenlight that bitch' (Of course in the age ofThe Emoji Moviemaybe this hit is a paragon of earnest artistic sincerity, who knows.)

You're the ship's captain, sir. You're aware that onboard the captain's word is law, aren't you?

I still don't understand what possessed Michael Haneke to recreate this for the US.He hardly seems like a profit driven kind of artist. Was it just his sadism? If anyone should do a recreation of an older horror classic, it's Gus Van Sant (kidding -- though I do love his version ofPsycho, don't @ me)

-What are you doing in there?

-Go away!

Oh look it's baby Jurnee Smollet-Bell before the days ofFriday Night Lights,True Blood, Underground,or anything. This is a good movie.

Didn't I tell you boys we'd live off the land?!

Young Jeff Bridges in a Robert Benton picture.Back when you could understand every line of dialogue he uttered. Those were the days of Bridges. That said I'm not watching this movie. This was definitely before the days of "no animals were harmed in the making of this picture" because they actually show this poor critter getting shot.

[Awards Trivia of Note: This movie was nominated by theWGA for Best Original Screenplaybut was passed over in the Oscar category. The WGA back then divided their awards up by drama and comedy (which they don't do anymore) so essentially they had 10 best Original Screenplay nominees. And only one of them (!!!) went on to an Oscar nomination --the Candidatewhich also won the Oscar.Oscar passed over all kinds of famous pictures in that WGA year including the beloved comedyWhat's Up Doc?and American auteurist pictures likeImagesandMinnie and Moskowitz...but at least they made room for two foreign classics:Murmur of the HeartandThe Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisiein their merciless purge.

Anybody up for some rehab humor?Because I am reallyreallyfine with acknowledging my disease!Hey and now watch me be really selfless and weave a lovely blanket apology to my sister for being atadout of her loop!

Rosemarie DeWitt is so f***ing great in this movie.Oscar did this picturesowrong. One measly nomination (Best Actress, which it shoulda won given the nominee pool) for Jonathan Demme's final masterpiece when it shoulda been up for so Picture, Screenplay, Director and more.

So agree about Rachel Getting Married.Loved everything about it.音乐是美妙的(特别是音乐地g the ending: ) and I usually dislike Hathaway but yes, she should have won for that brilliant performance.Still pissed DeWitt didn't get a nod.

Such a lovely and criminally underrated film.

I love Rachel Getting Married, and I love people whose #1 of 2008 is Rachel Getting Married.(Mine is Happy- Go-Lucky).

I agree, it should've been up for Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Supporting Actor for Irwin.Also...

In which category do you put Rosemarie De Witt?Supporting seems wrong to me.

My lineup:
Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky
Kristen Scott Thomas, Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
Rebecca Hall, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Rosemarie De Witt, Rachel Getting Married
Michelle Williams, Wendy and Lucy

Hathaway at #6.Still haven't seen Leo or Winslet's non-nominated performance.

Would love to see folks' 2008 Actress lineup and advice on how to consider De Witt supporting.LOL

It's so good to hear you say that you like Van Sant's "Psycho." I maintain that it's a film designed to be a middle-finger to the very idea of remakes and the leniency indie directors are given by studios after a mainstream hit.Thankfully, Van Sant did it when he was still in his prime, and not in his post-"Paranoid Park" slump.

Totally agree with your lineup, especially putting Sally Hawkins front and center forHappy-Go-Lucky, along with Rebecca Hall (I thought more than Scarlett Johansson and even Penelope Cruz it should have been Rebecca Hall who was nominated and feted but what do we really know how award voters pick their choices), Kristin Scott-Thomas (as someone who went through a similar kind of tragedy, I thought Kristin got everything right without showboating [much like what Charlotte Rampling did inUnder the Sandin 2000]), and especially Michelle Williams for Kelly Reichardt's quiet masterpieceWendy & Lucy. That would have been a great line up.

I love Rosemarie De Witt inRachel Getting Married-- that was the first time I have seen her in anything -- but I love Debra Winger's performance best amongst the three wonderful actresses in that film.

The final death inFunny Games, the French and American versions, still haunt me, so he did his magic well. Some of the most disturbing work captured on film.

I remember thinkingEve's Bayouwas absolutely spectacular, and yet I remember only a shot of Samuel L.Jackson by a train.Realy must watch again.

1963 is not happening, right? Please confirm.I'm starting to hate that year.

I'm still pissed Winger's wounded misunderstood mother wasn't nominated,no histrionics in that performance, the body language is also on point too.

Watch Eve's Bayou, people!It's a great movie.

And yeah, Rachel Getting Married deserved way more Oscar love than it got.I remember feeling especially sad that Bill Irwin didn't get a nomination, he broke my heart in that movie.

I think 2008 Lead should have been

Winslet - Rev Rd
Hawkins - Happy go Lucky
Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
Knightley - The Duchess
Leo - Frozen River

Tomei - The Wrestler
Winger - Rachel Getting Married
Davis - Doubt
Adams - Doubt
Cruz -Vicky Cristina Barcelona

2008 was such a strange Oscar season.

August 5, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

markgordon.Replace Knightley for Kristin Scott- Thomas and that would be the perfect line up in Lead .Totally agree in supporting

I remember being so excited to buy Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and when I finally watched it, I couldn't follow the plot at all.
