Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Laurie Strode is Coming Home!

By Spencer Coile

Although filming for theHalloweensequel began several weeks ago, fans of the horror movie franchise were given another jolt of excitement today when scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis took to social media and posted a photo from the set.

There's so much to unpack in the behind-the-scenes promo...

Same slate?Same Laurie? There is so much to unpack here!

There is still very little known about the final(?) chapter in the saga between Laurie Strode (Curtis) and her knife-wielding brother,Michael Mayers. But here is what we do know: the screenplay (approved by creator John Carpenter) will take place 40 years after the originalHalloween, and will be a direct sequel to the horror classic. That's right - nothing fromHalloween IIand beyond will exist.Which is fortunate, considering Laurie actually died inHalloween: Resurrectionin 2002.And let's not even get into Rob Zombie's reinvention of theHalloweenuniverse.

So where does that leave us?

Ignoring many of the problems that befell theHalloweensaga after its first film might offer a refreshing take on the series.Additionally, the use of the slate from the original film is a delightful surprise - not only because you can faintly read Carpenter's name under Green's,but perhaps this will mean a return to the classic scares and surprisesHalloweenoffered.Danny McBride, who co-wrote the screenplay, claims:

I think we're just trying to strip it down and just take it back to what was so good about the original. It was just very simple and just achieved that level of horror that wasn't corny and it wasn't turning Michael Myers into some being that couldn't be killed. That stuff to me isn't scary.I want to be scared by something that I really think could happen.I think it's much more horrifying to be scared by someone standing in the shadows while you're taking the trash out as opposed to someone who can't be killed pursuing you.

And if all of that was not enough to make thisHalloweensequel promising, also remember that Judy Greer will be playing Laurie's daughter,Karen Strode. With so little else known we still have months to fret over the details before October 19 rolls around. What questions or concerns or fantasies do you have?

So,even "Halloween: H20"doesn't even count?Because I thought that was a pretty good one (with some pre-star casting).Looking forward to this. One of the all time great film scores too.

I'm cool with the reboot/reimagining/re-whatever.I liked Part II,I liked H20,and I want to see what they do next.

We didnt find out they were related until Halloween II,right?

I thought the Rob Zombie Halloweens were an interesting alternate universe take.I mean,I realize that's a minority opinion, lol, but Laurie Strode had an interesting arc in both of them.Great supporting cast, too.

Going off some quotes and a photo meant to lure the fans back, sure,it looks great.

But we've all been burned before, and we'll all be burned again.

Here's to having some ointment handy!Bring it,JLC,I'll watch you in anything!

I'm a bit miffed by the way these franchises just think they can disregard so many films.HALLOWEEN II and HALLOWEEN H20 are especially good and ought to be considered canon.HALLOWEEN 4 is also a lot of fun,but to include it would be to then muddy the character arc for the current Laurie,I guess.

At least they kept Laurie's1978 hairdo.

I liked H2O as well, but I'm ok with this taking place after the first one.Especially if they really get it right - some of the original's scariest sequences were the ones that took place in the middle of the day, with Strode getting stalked in broad daylight and no one noticing. Also,LOVE Greer as her daughter!

I love the original Halloween but it's time this franchise was buried once and for all.Not one of the Michael Myers-based sequels was ever really up to snuff (closest were Halloween 2 & H20).So many horror franchises grind on and on,wearily, long after anything new or fresh can be gleaned from them.It bums me out because I love a good horror film.
