Netflix December: Mowgli,Dumplin',and The Lobster

A belated Streaming Roulette. We forgot to share Netflix's new offerings so here we are a week late, surveying new titles by freeze framing films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share. No cheating.Whats new on Netflix?Let's see...

I killed your brother.

The Lobster(2015/2016)
"Heartless Woman"absolutely upset me in this movie...but I love the rest of the movie (including that nobody has a name except the main character) which made my top ten list in its year. The Favouriteis my new favorite Yorgos Lanthimos now, though.Which is your favorite of his merciless and haunting but sometimes indelibly funny movies:Dogtooth,Alps,The Lobster,Killing of a Sacred Deer,orThe Favourite?

Related: Remember that great piece Daniel Walber wrote aboutThe Lobster's phony flowers and production design.

[whispering in foreign languages]

Terminator Salvation(2009)
Anton Yelchin *sniffle*.Sometimes it astoundshow many Terminators we've had when the only movies worth a damn are the first two James Cameron classics.Literally the only thing I remember about this one was that caught-on-audiotape scandal where Christian Bale was bullying and demeaning one of the camera men.

Sometimes fear is the only intelligent response.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle(2018)
Ooh,it's the Kaa scene. But sorry Cate Blanchett and ScarJo before you,the best Kaa voice is still Sterling Holloway. It's so subversive to hear the soothing tones of the Winnie the Pooh voice lulling you into doom.

I ♥️Jungle Book '67 so much and there's really no reason to keep remaking when it was done so well in '42,'67,and '94,you know?

Got a table for you, right over here.

Dumplin'(2018)
The only thing I know about this is that Dolly Parton wrote and sings a Globe-nominated songthat they're also pushing for an Oscar.Isn't Ginger Minj in it too? It's quite a year for RuPaul's Drag Race alums in the movies.

[zombie groan and screaming]

Shaun of the Dead(2004)
I wish I loved this as much as everyone else but it is amusing.

There was a rumor of a saint who could talk to animals, that they understood and obeyed him.

Happy as Lazzaro(2018)
That shot above reminds me of something out ofZama?I haven't watched this yet but people seem to really love it,including Jason right hereand the nominating committee ofthe European Film Awards. In the end Italy went withDogmanfor their Oscar submission though.

So can you help me or not? Please.

The World is Yours(2018)
Isabelle Adjani alert! But this appears to be a crime drama mostly about men.Merde.

Lobster is such a great film, but Dogtooth is the true Lanthimos masterpiece!

Dumplin' won't change anyone's life, but it is cute and fun and filled with Dolly songs. It's my favorite of the Netflix comedies I've seen this year.

Damn,Isabelle! How many children have you Hocus Pocus'd by now?

Dogtooth remains unchallenged as Lanthimos' masterpiece. His sensibilities feel entirely different in English.Makes me wonder if Almodovar should even bother?

With the caveat I haven't seen "Alps,"my favorite is "The Lobster"by quite a margin."Dogtooth"feels a bit too beholden to Haneke and "Killing of a Sacred Deer,"while brilliantly constructed,is quintessential empty, gross provocation."The Favourite"is very good but I wish it would have gone darker, and I don't think it's up to the same level of formalist finesse as the other ones.

The Terminator- sequels- remakes just kept getting worse and worse

Just in case,Nat: the one from the GIF is Robin Hood's Sir Hiss, not Kaa.

Lanthimos is one of the great aueteurs of our time methinks. My ranking:

1.DOGTOOTH
2.THE FAVOURITE
3.THE LOBSTER
4.THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER
5.ALPS
6.KINETTA
