"Sister Brothers"Trailer + Updated Oscar Acting Charts

by Nathaniel R

Quip Quip Bang Bang.← I probably should've saved that sentence for the eventual review ofThe Sisters Brothersbut here we are with the trailer upon us just as we're trying to update the Oscar charts. The western comedy (?) is adapted from the novel by Patrick DeWitt which isabout two assassins Eli (John C Reilly) and Charlie Sisters (Joaquin Phoenix),who are sent to a man named Warm (Riz Ahmed),who is accused of stealing from the Sisters' boss The Commodore (Rutger Hauer, unseen in this first trailer).More after the jump...

The  trailer leaves us a bit off balance as to what to expect.

French master Jacques Audiard doing an English language Western Comedy? His movies (Read My Lips,The Beat that My Heart Skipped,A Prophet, etecetera) tend to be powerful and exciting but they aren't usually silly, you know!Is the trailer deceiving as to the film's tone?Does the movie swing from comedy to dramatic resonance?Either way we're excited to see the performances, particularly Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed reuniting postNightcrawler.

How do I get the gold just beneath my feet?

Will they get more awards traction this time? They both gotsomeattention for that earlier paranoid thriller but Oscar passed.Ahmed's career has really taken off since then and of course Gyllenhaal remains one of the industry's least awarded but most talented A list men.

The problem (at least with Oscar season) is that Jake does not seem to care about awards. You hear that all the time about actors but they prove differently quite regularly when they campaign like mad for the gold. Not so with Gyllenhaal who apears to be quite chill about it when awards season approaches. That might be why he still stands at only one Oscar nomination and was willing to forgo a Tony campaign entirely for his highly acclaimed work inSunday in the Park with Georgeon Broadway. The production opted not to be eligible at all and didn't invite Tony voters...that's not common even with the prevalence of limited runs with movie stars on the boards.

This looks so fucking cool. The cast alone and Jacques Audiard is enough for me to be on board.

I wonder if PTA will be triggered at the sight of John C Riley together with Joaquin Phoenix? He hasn't used John since Magnolia. And Joaquin is his new go-to when Day-Lewis isn't available.Anticipating this movie.Hopefully it won't be limited to an art house run and they place in more affordable multiplexes.

I just can't help but think the Academy will probably turn their nose up at Gaga like Beyonce (DREAMGIRLS) and Madonna (MADONNA) before her.But yeah,Golden Globe slam-dunk for sure.

Ethan Hawke in First Reformed should not be forgotten come awards season. It's an incredible performance and one that's very hard to shake.I have a feeling this could play out like Javier Bardem's best actor nod for Biutiful.Actors will take up the cause for him.

Joaquin Phoenix is potentially having a good year with YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE,DON'T WORRY...and THE SISTERS BROTHERS.

Like Jake, another fine actor who isn't much of a personal campaigner.

there's one woman in that trailer and she's bound and bleeding

There was once a time where I would have said Audiard could do no wrong, but that was before Dheepan.

This looks uncharacteristic though. And it also looks like a very rare 4-lead movie, which must make prognosticating hard.

I would love for Gyllenhaal to get his due from the Academy, but I'm ok with it not happening if it means he keeps delivering like he has been.

"The problem (at least with Oscar season) is that Jake does not seem to care about awards"

LMFAO - You can't be serious about that Nathaniel, not especially after last year's circus of campaign by Jake Gyllenhaal.

-I mean, sending signed letters about the film to almost every American critic:
-Making an special diner in promotion with some Oscar voters like Hugh Jackman.
-Bringing Jeff Bauman to the awards season like Harvey did with Philomena Lee.

Among other things.Come on,that was a great joke.

Nathaniel,I respect you,but please,no one can't be that delusional.Jake Gyllenhaal was on desperate mode last year coming from Melissa Leo's playbook.

Nathaniel,I read two reviews that stated Washington was the weak link in Spike Lee's film.I do not think it's happening.I love your faith in Gaga - I hope she just kills it!!

Leon & Hanna -- I actually go to these campaign things. And I've only seen Jake at like three things in my life and he wasn't shaking every hand and kissing every baby.Jake does what's required of him but he is *not* one of those "gimme the Oscar!"types, trust.I know the difference.I've seen it with my eyes and shaken the hands.Signed letters are super common and it's not like the stars are sitting at their personal desks inscribing them ;)

I can't hate Jake after seeing him (twice!) in Sunday in the Park with George...He was so damn good in it.Hope he gets a nom sometime soon - he's definitely put in enough dues lately.

The Washington prediction is a curious one;I can totally see that happening, too, even if he didn't get standout reviews (or did he?).Also, not for nothing, but I find Adam Driver to be incredibly sexy and I can't figure out why.Ugh.

Are you so sure about John David Washington? In his Cannes review,Variety's Peter Debruge said he was "only adequate".I read 3 other Cannes reviews and only one mentioned him somewhat approvingly and the other 2 did not mention him at all.

What does Ethan Hawke need to do to get on your Best Actor chart?

June 3,2018 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

For Supporting Actor,I think you seriously consider Hugh Grant for "Paddington 2"at least for the random list of possibilities.I know that the genre and the January release date doesn't look promising but it is a very well-received performance and he did get a BAFTA nomination the previous year.

June 3,2018 | Unregistered CommenterIrvin

Marcos -- I am not "so sure"about anyone at all on any chart it being only June :) but I think if BlackKklansman becomes a hit and a cause, anything is possible.

Suzanne -- i probably need to see the movie to remember it when i'm making these charts, that's what!I keep thinking the movie is from last year (because I guess it debuted then because i've been hearing about it forever) but it wasn't reelased til this year so i need to get on that.

June 3,2018 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

My male votes of this year are your best actor chart minus Willem Dafoe. In his place I want Hugh Jackman because he deserves last year nomination for Logan.

On the male supporting I'm only rooting for Dick Van Dyke and Armie Hammer. And,I know is wild, but let's all think in Henry Cavill in Mission: Impossible Fallout.I know is weird,but...who knows?

On the female leading performances...

Glenn Close - locked
Carey Mulligan - locked

My other wishes?

Any black actress
Charlize Théron
Emma,Olivia,Toni or Julianne

no Lady Gaga.

That's all.

Rami Malek needs to go way up.
