MINDHUNTER (s2 episodes 1-2)

"I am also a big fan of this show, because of Fincher and the detective work, even if the show skirts very close sometimes to murderer fetish..."-Jono

"I love this show.I binged 7 of the 9 episodes and could have finished but I wanted to savor it a little longer. It's such an engrossing show and beautifully filmed"-Raul

"Little"is a hit but "Shazam!"stays on top

What did you see over the weekend? We waited until Monday night to get the full receipts on the arthouse releases (which often report late).BothShazam!andThe Mustang(still expanding) stayed on top in their second and fifth weekend respectively. It was a crowded weekend...well,overcrowded actually, since only the new comedyLittlemanaged to make much of a box office impression of the 17 (gulp) new releases.Sadly Laika, our current favourite animation studio, had trouble.Missing Linkproved their weakest opening by far with only $5.8 million (they generally manage about $14 million on opening weekends).

Here's the top ten in both wide and platform titles...

Most of the new releases failed to make much of an impression. The long delayedMary Magdalenestarring Rooney Mara finally appeared, for example, but earned just $62k from 61 screens.Of the week's specialty offeringsHer Smellstarring Elisabeth Moss had the weekend's highest per screen average with just over $12,000 from each of its three screens.Sauvage/Wild,which we just talked about on the podcast, took in $7,000 but it's only playing at 1 theater in NYC.

I saw US which left me with a lot to think about and was better than I expected.More science-fiction than horror.Lupita Nyong'o will I think be in the Best Actress conversation this year - even if it's only to about the same level as Toni Collette last year,ie not enough!

I also saw THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY for the first time, which was Shirley Maclaine's film debut. It seemed to me a one-joke movie but was enjoyable enough.

And I watched WAYNE,a documentary about Australia's first world championship grand prix motorcycle racer,Wayne Gardner. Some good 80s bike footage and interesting interviews but it was one of those documentaries that proved frustrating for what it left out and didn't address.

I saw HIGH LIFE,which I'll just go ahead and say is one of the best films I've seen in years.Perhaps my favourite since ELLE.

I rewatched Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. That scene where Burstyn is talking to Kristofferson about kissing ...so good. And talk about a great year for ladies in movies ...Gena Rowlands and Diahann Carroll and Faye Dunaway. And that was the Liv Ullman Scenes from a Marriage year.Wow.Watching ADLHA also reminded me that we all need a little more Diane Ladd in our lives.

No new releases, but did watch Meet Joe Black after it went viral last week.Very long, but oddly enough, won me over by the end.It was definitely the Thomas Newman score.

I saw Ben-Hur in theatres.I've watched it many times, but it really demands the largest screen (and the most comfortable chairs because it's so long) you can see it on.Overwhelming.

The Mustang -- this is fairly honest and brutal about prison life and treatment of wild horses, but somehow ends up being very inspirational.I am definitely glad I saw it.

Game of Thrones (new episode)-- fantasy porn and also very enjoyable.

Saw BEN HUR for the first time ever,on the Big Screen for Fathom Events. It's showing Wednesday the 17th if you get a chance.

Well worth it.Really good story, great performances, the money is up there on the screen, and the Chariot and much less famous Ship battle are spectacular.

forever--me too.A magical experience at the theater.Full disclosure: It's my favorite movie, and I feel it doesn't get the respect it deserves.I was overwhelmed, even after seeing it many times.I went with three friends, one of whom had never seen it.He adored it.Rapturous film.

I saw the dreadful "Pet Sematary"the people who made this movie should not be allowed any where near a movie camera again.Lithgow always gives a good performance. But the actors playing the parents were dull- the new improved story make no sense specially the idiot ending which seem to want to set up a sequel.Terrible!

Greta was laughably bad!
