Whoa - I genuinely have no clue who will win 2001.

Maybe it's time for me to finally watch Iris.

Just...please say nice things about Shelley Winters, fer chrissake.

I'm campaigning for 2004.It was the first Oscars I watched!亚博主页

Yeah 2001 is a rough one.

Iris - Never saw, sure Judi is perfectly fine in it.
In the Bedroom - Yes,Marisa, you deserved it in 1992!
Gosford Park - Emily Watson should've also been here.
A Beautiful Mind - Connelly should've been nom'd the year before for Requiem for a Dream, and this whole movie kinda stinks.

The also rans?

Scarlett Johansson,Ghost World
Frances O'Connor,A.I.
Laura Elena Harring,Mulholland Dr.
Pfeiffer / Zellweger,White Oleander
Cameron Diaz,Vanilla Sky
Cate Blanchett,Bandits
Dakota Fanning,I am Sam

I have to go Tomei in 2001 but the other 4 have strong moments and overall it's a respectable line up

My nominees

Blanchett The Shipping news
Winslet Iris
Tomei In the Bedroom
Mirren Gosford Park
Diaz Vanilla Sky

April 26,2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

2001!Get out!Smith is perfect here as is Mirren.Gosford Park is my favourite movie - I would still fill the whole category with women from that movie

Scott-Thomas is delicious - her character is pitch perfect.
Emily Watson is fantastic - best in show.
Smith is sublime - remember this was the first emergence of the dowager countess - long before Downton Abbey.
Mirren breaks your heart.
The last slot would either be Kelly MacDonald for being the perfect audience surrogate or Atkins for being steel but knowing when to allow the emotion to shine through.

But Marisa Tomei deserves every award and this is one of Dench's stronger performances so can't fault the line-up.Minus the winner.

Paranoid and Morgan -- it's actually Kate Winslet we'll be talking about for IRIS since Judi was nominated in leading actress.

April 26,2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Tomei ALL THE WAY!She is completely heartbreaking on so many levels.

This lineup is kind of great though.I mean,Connelly isn't amazing, and she's definitely #5 in this rather remarkable lineup, but she's also not anywhere near terrible so I can't hate on her win.

I'd rank this lineup:

1) Tomei
2) Winslet
3) Mirren
4) Smith
5) Connelly

This was such a marvelous year though.I mean, the entire Gosford cast,+ Johansson,O'Connor,Harring,Fanning,Blanchet,Diaz,Paltrow,Huston,Flanagan,Washington,McDormand,Murphy,Phoenix...you kind of can't go wrong no matter what your lineup is.

My personal lineup would be:

1) Tomei / In the Bedroom
2) O'Connor / A.I.
3) Winslet / Iris
4) Mirren / Gosford Park
5) Scott-Thomas / Gosford Park

But...Diaz is SO close...

Morgan - I'm with you,I love Gosford Park, and have a hard time with only 2 supporting nominations.(But at least they won the SAG award for Best Cast).
It's one of Helen Mirren's best performances,(she killed her boss to protect her son) and has that emotional scene at the end.On the other hand Maggie Smith kills every line and is probably the most quoted.
Looking forward to all smackdowns regardless of the year.

April 26,2019 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Of course it is!Silly me - I had it in my head that Winslet's nominations were all leading except her first and last ones!

Not my favourite of her performances but a worthy nominee- the also rams that year are very fascinating as well.

April 26,2019 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

I always hope for '97 because it's the first year I got really into the Oscars and Gene Siskel in TV Guide emphatically said there were no upsets possible in the category this year and then there was one!亚博主页Plus you have three Best Picture nominees represented,a first nomination from another lauded film, and an outlier of a comedic performance.

2001 is Smith's to lose in my opinion...

My own ballot -

1) Kristin Scott Thomas - Gosford Park
2) Frances McDormand - The Man Who Wasn't There
3) Maggie Smith - Gosford Park
4) Mary McDonnell - Donnie Darko
5) Claudie Blakley - Gosford Park

Honorable mentions not already listed above -

Summer Phoenix - The Believer
Rain Phoenix - O

April 27,2019 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

And my Gosford Park-only ballot (we all have one?)

1) Kristin Scott Thomas
2) Maggie Smith
3) Claudie Blakley
4) Helen Mirren
5) Emily Watson

With honorable mentions to MacDonald,Atkins and Somerville...

April 27,2019 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Omggg can't wait to revisit 2001.Tomei FTW!

April 27,2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

Tomei, possibly Mirren, unless Smith has swung back to the favoured nominated performance from Gosford Park.Winslet and Connelly, thanks for coming along, grab a cuppa and enjoy the contest.

April 27,2019 | Unregistered CommenterHenny

I remember one of the interesting factoids about this race was that Winslet was nominated for a second time playing the younger version of her character - and that both she and her older counterpart were nominated. However,in Titanic Winslet was up for Lead and Gloria Stuart was up for Supporting, while for Iris this was reversed: Winslet was up for Supporting and Dench for Lead. And none of them won!

May 1,2019 | Unregistered CommenterRob

I remember loving this 2001 lineup in toto at the time -- one of those years where I actually got to see all the nominees in a certain category before the show (I miss the lazy days of college).Obviously if I were to revisit ABM now I'm not sure how that would hold up.
