It was another historic weekend forAvengers: Endgame, which pushed over the $700 million domestic mark where only 3 previous movies have ever gone (if you dont adjust for inflation)Black Panther,The Force Awakens, andAvatar.Pokemon Detective Pikachualso had a historic weekend, with the biggest gross of any video game adaptation in its first weekend. There are only 13 movies currently in wide release the rest of the mainstream offerings having lost a lot of theaters given that there were four new wide release titles this weekend.Tolkienfared the worst of all of those.

Elsewhere nothing was breaking records though theBiggest Little Farmdocumentary, which had done well at festivals, had the weekend's highest pre-screen average (on just 5 screens).Shadow,Zhang Yimou's ravishing new visual spectacle, risked a fairly big expansion in its second weekend to 47 screens but so far it's not making moviegoer waves.Go see it!

In limited releaseCharlie Says(reviewed) had a rough opening with little moviegoer interest, debuting on 38 screens but only earning $19k in total and not even making the top 15 at the arthouses.

What do you think of Endgame's Oscar chances? Is it just going to get fx nominations or is it going bigger like Black Panther? It has reached epic grosses and has become a cultural phenomenon. It might get best picture heat but it won't win.As for the actors,I really don't think Evans or Downey have a shot at best actor.Johannson and Gillan had the most complete character arcs so I guess they might have a shot at supporting actress.

Black Panther's award season run won't be easily duplicated because it happened first.

I think Disney will push hard for best picture (along with the "final"Star Wars, unless Lion King was way more acclaimed than assumed) and it has a fair chance. But it doesn't look like it is really pulling in the repeat audiences like Titanic/Avatar and even Black Panther,so it may also be easily forgotten by the end of the year.

I can't imagine Endgame will make it into the Best Picture category.Even though it is a massive hit,it just doesn't seem to have the Cache Panther did - up and coming director, deep audience love, film critics discussing its ideas.

I may be wrong, but it just doesn't seem poised to make an impact.

"The Hustle"(terrible title) with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.

It hews really closely to the script of the second of the 3 movies,"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels",so there aren't really surprises.

I suppose the positive thing is that it shows you can gender swap without having to worry about the need for ingenuity or hard work. You just use the same old script, and it's passable.

Of the two leading roles, the Niven/ Caine/ Hathaway role is by far the better role.I'm okay with Rebel Wilson but Hathaway is much funnier, quicker, and able to switch up styles and pace.

My random thoughts during the movie were about things I miss.I miss Glenn Headley, sparkling and light and quick.I miss Queen Latifah, why haven't I seen her recently?I love her.I like both of them better than the two actors doing those roles in this movie.

I miss Nancy Meyers. Her houses and settings are so desirable and enviable,I want to live in them and have that life.

Poor Anne Hathaway's character lives in an ugly boring house, and never seems to have any fun.Except maybe with her police inspector friend, and that all happens offscreen.Hathaway's character works all the time, doing an endless series of discouraging jobs with icky men. It's not enviable, and it's not even escapist.

David Niven and Michael Caine loved their exquisite lush lives, surrounded by ease, beauty, and pleasure.Anne is a workhorse with a few cute outfits.

Saw a few episodes ofDix pour centaka "Call My Agent!"on Netflix.Love the "Isabelle"episode (Season 2) featuring Adjani. This ageless acting legend is up to the challenge of portraying a version of herself to quiet aplomb.I love the quaintness of her character and towards the end when she met her director nemesis, she was all command, full glory Adjani - -it's hard not to imagine that she can do that for real.

The other "Isabelle"episode (Season 3) features Huppert.Like inGreta,Huppert obviously had fun playing a variation of herself. She is hilarious without trying.Like Adjani,it is not difficult to imagine that she can and might be that person she is playing onscreen.I laughed out loud at the ending when she has to explain the presence of an Asian director in her house. She was portrayed as working all the time and clearly loving her hectic schedule.

The regulars of the show are all wonderful and totally credible. At times veering towards black comedy, the episodes are mostly bouyant. The pace of all episodes run smoothly like a French telenovela.Although there is loss in translation in the English subtitles, they kept the caption idiomatic rather than precise.

Tom G.: No,Endgame is not going to get in for Best Picture. If Winter Soldier (though,I bet you a substantial chunk of the Academy is KICKING themselves over not nominating a "the spies have been taken over by (essentially) Nazis"movie) couldn't pull it off...?Endgame doesn't have a chance, and it's a very different beast anyway. How so?Well, what flows into Winter Soldier in a major way?

1.Captain America: The First Avenger

Okay, only the prior movie in the sub franchise has major ties to Winter Soldier. What about Endgame?

1.The Avengers
2.Thor: The Dark World
3.Guardians of the Galaxy
4.Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2
5.Avengers: Infinity War
6.Ant-Man and the Wasp

That's six movies, just for the major plot and character stuff that flows into Endgame, and the Academy isn't made up of people swimming in the Marvel movie mythos. It'd probably be like pulling teeth to get many of them on board with re-watching ONE Marvel movie.SIX,including one that is generally perceived as low tier on the Marvel scale? Not happening.

I caught an early screening of Booksmart, and I cannot recommend the movie highly enough. It's the coming of age movie I wish I had when I was younger.

"What do you think of Endgame's Oscar chances? Is it just going to get fx nominations or is it going bigger like Black Panther?"
Black Panther benefited from social issues (first black superhero of the series, breaking barriers, diversity),something that Avengers Endgame doesn't have to convince The Academy. If it was White Panther it wouldn't have happened.

I watched Wine Country on Netflix.Pleasant and I chuckled quite a bit but disappointing in that it wasn't Bridesmaids hysterical. If I saw in theatre,I would have been more disappointed. On Netflix though - enjoyable Sunday evening.

rereading my comment I was a bit hasty, this part is patently incorrect:"substantial chunk of the Academy is KICKING themselves over not nominating a "the spies have been taken over by (essentially) Nazis"movie"

I saw "Curse of La Llorona"which besides it Latino flavor was a rather routine horror movie aimed a kids.Regarding "The Avengers Endgame"Oscar chances I would love to see Chris Hemsworth get a Best Supporting Nomination- his fat Thor was the most human element in the film

I imagine ENDGAME will follow a similar path to the likes of the original IRON MAN or more recently stuff like DEADPOOL.It'll be talked about, people will try to talk it up but likely will only end up landing vfx and sound nominations (although I honestly think if they wanted to get it an acting nomination,it's not Downey but Karen Gillan).
