A relatively quiet week at the box office unless you're among the target audiences for the faith-based dramaOvercomeror part of the Gerard Butler fan club sinceAngel HasFallen opened above expectations (its a sequel toLondon has Fallen).Outside these charts festival favouritePeanut Butter Falcon(reviewed) expanded into wide release with a solid $3 million and another festival hitBrittany Runs a Marathonhad the weekend's best per screen average with $35k from each of its five locations.Sadly the Elizabeth Debicki Virginia Woolf filmVita and Virginiawas all but ignored grossing only $4k at one location.

I said goodbye to the ladies of Orange Is the New Black.Yes,there were tears.I'll miss that remarkable group of women (and actresses)

Id rather gauge out my own eyes than to ever see one of those corny faith based movies

I watched Ready or Not.The dialogue is among the worst I've heard in a theatrically released horror film in years. The actual story was good, but the dialogue wrecked it.I'd say at least 10% of the script is people screaming the f word. Then it's either exposition dump monologues or really awkward one-liners.

Speaking of Elizabeth Debicki,I finally watched The Tale.Great actressing from Debicki and Laura Dern.Fantastic writing, too.

I saw Ready or Not.It wasn't as gory or satiric as I expected. The plot was straightforward and the length was good (about 90 minutes).

It was well lit, clearly photographed, with a great backdrop.(The mansion interiors here were also used for Professor Xavier's School for the Gifted in X Men).

The lead actress was aces. The expert supporting cast executed the plot with economy, ease, and flair.

I saw Luce this weekend and I loved it.The actress who played Octavia's sister deserves award consideration for her performance. The movie at best is an adapted screenplay push.

Disobedience.Really liked it

I had a massive movie weekend.I saw Museo, which is very Steve McQueen-like in its direction. And because Bernal is showing his age a little,I watched Y tu mama,to remember baby Gael.
And I also watched Written on the Wind,to fill in a supporting actress blank, and Stop Making Sense, cuz I've been on a Heads kick.

Mike -- ooh,i'm always glad when people see MUSEO.it was under appreciated.

/3rtful -- i still need to see that.I keep hearing Octavia is amazing.

"Under the Silver Lake,"a perfect film for our disaffected, pop culture-obsessed,paranoid times.Lots of treats for lovers of L.A.noirs.More pastiche than anything but lots of fun.

Cash : Debicki was robbed of an Enmy nomination.

I saw Capernaum (is that thy English title?).Monumental work!!!Zain was the best actor, hands down, last year!Still thinking in the film after two days and needed to see Shoplifters once again because they are speaking with each other inside of me very much.

Finally went to see Once upon a Time...in Hollywood and boy did I find it pompous and underwhelming!
Sure, the directing is great and Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances in years but, come on,this has to be Tarantino's weakest screenplay! Some of the scenes were completely useless (the meeting with Bruce Dern's character;poor, underused Margot Robbie at the movies;the fight with Bruce Lee...) and I found the pace of the movie very problematic.I didn't know what to think of DiCaprio, his scene with the little girl in the saloon was brilliant but many times I felt like I had already seen the exact same performance in one of his previous movies, which was quite disturbing.

In appreciation of Sally Field I watched her 95 revenge thriller Eye for an Eye,it wasn't very good, despite a fantastic cast.

August 26,2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

I watched Where'd Ya Go Bernadette,it was entertaining enough and CB was her great usual self but what did it all add up to in the end,not sure.Still it was much better than the terrible reviews made it out to be.I also watched Angel Has Fallen, which was silly, made no sense in parts but who cares,it was a fun movie with lots of decent action set pieces.

August 26,2019 | Unregistered CommenterRami

I don't know if I think "Under the Silver Lake"is good, but I find myself wanting to re-watch it once a month!

August 26,2019 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

I saw "Brittany Runs a Marathon"and loved it.I'm a runner and I think this movie is the most realistic portrayal of regular runners.Jillian Bell is phenomenal and so is Michaela Watkins.Micah Stock is adorable and I look forward to seeing him in future projects.

August 26,2019 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

I question whether Leo will be remembered as a great actor or not.I do think he has limited range and apart from What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Marvin's Room,I can't recall a movie where I thought he was really good.So this is several decades of average performances?

August 26,2019 | Unregistered CommenterFaye

I LOLd at GOOD BOYS.

August 27,2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew Carden

Nothing in the theater but I did watch "A Summer Place"(1959) on TCM.Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee fall in love as their parents sordid past brings up repressed desires. The film is at times campy but still works thanks to the cast, the gorgeous photography and Max Steinner's classic score

August 27,2019 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Watched the incomparable Marsha Mason again in Only When I Laugh. How in the goddamn fuck did she not win the Oscar. One of THE greatest screen performances. The phone call! Also,Hackett,Coco and McNichol are wonderful.

August 27,2019 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

I have watched the first few episodes of Succession season 2 on HBO and it's really good.
