Mark Your Calendars!Awards Season Takes Shape

by Nathaniel R

The article which inspired "Dark Waters"

You know we're on the cusp between summer and the fall festivals when the Thanksgiving and Christmas calendars start looking over-crowded with awards-hopefuls and certain films start to drop off choosing the following year instead. In the latest batch of release date news we learn that the new Todd Haynes film, now titledDark Waters, will be opening November 22nd.It's skipping the fall festivals since it's still in post-production.In a bit of a change of pace for Haynes,he didn't write this one. It's a true story environmental drama starring Mark Ruffalo as a lawyer taking on a polluting corporation.Tim Robbins and Bill Pullman are the main supporting cast members and Anne Hathaway is also onboard as Ruffalo's wife. And yes this means we'll be updating the Oscar charts again before we leave for TIFF.

Aside from a couple titles I'm not excited about this year's slate at all.But there are always gems to be discovered. We shall see how it turns out.

"Dolemite is My Name"should be a shoo-in for a costume nom, based on the preview.I'm excited to see it,and how Eddie Murphy does - plus Keegan-Michael Key,Craig Robinson,Tituss Burgess - plus Snoop (even if his performance is only 5x the screen time of the trailer,I still love seeing that guy).

I'm excited for "Dark Waters"as well,b/c Todd Haynes, but also Mark Ruffalo has been sequestered in marvel movies and I'm excited for him to be in a movie that is for me (or at least not "not for me").He has more "The Kids are Alright"/"You Can Count on Me"level performances in him.hopefully having been the hulk brings him more opportunity to do great acting.
