Weathering With You- NOW IN THEATERS!

"Thank you for this balanced review. I unabashedly love the film and lament its having failed to get traction in the Best Animated Feature category (and in the International Feature Film category, for that matter!), but I understand and agree with most of your caveats..." -Ron

The movie “Harriet” was a milestone, a long awaited film about one of the greatest American heroes.

“Harriet” was beautifully and thoughtfully directed, narratively clear and visually evocative. It has a powerhouse performance by Cynthia Erivo at its centre: bold, direct, uncompromising, original, full of fire and intelligence.Think of Daniel Day Lewis in “Lincoln” for an equivalent actor’s power and insight.

So it’s a bit disconcerting how the narrative around “Harriet” has gone.

- Erivo is magnificent (but I’m uninterested in stories about African-American women).
- Erivo is great, but the movie is not much.
- Erivo is good, but the movie is a mess.
- Erivo is okay, but omg, another biopic?
- You can’t vote for Erivo, because then you aren’t voting for performance, you’re voting for “diversity”.As the only nominee of colour, she is automatically disqualified.

Yes, Jojo Rabbit does pass the Bechdel Test.Elsa and Rose have a conversation in Elsa's hideout where they talk about what it means to be a woman, and at no point do they mention any male characters (they have two conversations to themselves in the film, in the first one they mention Jojo, but no men are mentioned in the second one as far as I remember). You should re-watch it Nathaniel, to me it played really well on second viewing.

@ Richter Scale- I think Once Upon...also passes.Sharon Tate has a conversation with the movie ticket agent about movies and herself. She also talks to a woman who pulled up in a car in the driveway during Sharon's pregnancy.I can't remember the other woman's name but she had a yellow dress. Also, most of the Manson family are women and I believe they were talking amongst themselves.

@adri- I also agree with you that Cynthia Erivo gave a marvelous performance in Harriet.I stated before that I truly cannot imagine another actress playing the part better than she did.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD actually *does* pass the Bechdel test!

-Lulu and Connie talk about horseback riding
-Sharon and Joanna talk about the nursery

And some of Squeaky and Snake’s dialogue passes
