99¢: Boogie Nights,First Reformed,Heathers,A History of Violence

Heads up on these great deals for four truly awesome movies on iTunes.iTunes deals expire quickly so if you've always wanted to see or revisit any of these they're only 99¢ this week.

First Reformed- The nomination leader atthe Gotham Awardsand we still think Ethan Hawke could nab a Best Actor Oscar nomination for it.
Boogie Nights- The film that made Paul Thomas Anderson famous, and delivered Julianne Moore 'the foxiest bitch in the whole world' her first Oscar nomination (which she should've won).
A History of Violence- David Cronenberg's masterful adaptation of a graphic novel nabbed two Oscar nominations for its screenplay and for William Hurt's late film curtain chewing but it started the season with lots more Oscar buzz.It should have been up for everything, especially the big four: Picture,Director,Actor,Actress. It did really well at our own Film Bitch Awards that year winning several medals including the gold for the frankly scorching sex scene between Viggo and Maria Bello in her all time best screen performance.
Heathers- 'Fuck me gently with a chainsaw...' it'sthehigh school black comedy wherein Winona Ryder's  'teen-angst bullshit has a body count'.

Great...Train Robbery,Detective,Balls of Fire

On this day in history as it relates to the movies...

1859Arthur Conan Doyle is born.Probably rolls over in his grave 150 years later when Guy Ritchie'sSherlock Holmespremieres and the great detective becomes a slo mo action hero
1868The Great Train Robbery happens. It's the subject of a highly influential 10 minute silent film (embedded above) as soon as people figure out what to do with cameras and celluloid in 1903.Cross-cutting,breaking the fourth wall, inventing the western action movie genre? It's all happening right here.
1907Laurence Olivieris born.Not yet a "Sir"but already expecting a cooing audience
1945Paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren are married. They become the fab Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson inThe Conjuring (2013) andThe Conjuring 2(2016)

1958Jerry Lee Lewis tells the world he's married his 13 year old cousin Myra.Later they look just like Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder in a movie
1967Brooke Smith,the girl in the pit,is born
1973Nikolaj Lie Kass,Danish actor of underappreciated hotness (Brothers,The Idiots),is born
1998The Opposite of Sexhits theaters,Christina Ricci gets a well deserved Golden Globe Best Actress nod for her inspired star turn
2005The razor sharp Cronenberg filmA History of Violencewas stiffed of any prize at the Cannes Film Festival despite a strange round of winners which at least included Michael Haneke as Best Director for the brilliantCaché.Both films went to to make the Best Picture lineup right here at The Film Experience.亚博主页
2016The 69th annual Cannes Film Festival closes.Awards ceremony tonight in France so come back for the winners in the late afternoon!

Viggo Mortensen: Still here,still fantastic

Our celebration of Actors this month continues with Lynn Lee on Viggo

Is Viggo Mortensen the most interesting man in the world?Based on his peripatetic history and eclectic interests,he's certainly a contender.  In addition to acting,he's a prolific painter, photographer, composer, and poet who founded his own publishing house.  A dual American and Danish citizen who spent his early childhood in South America and Denmark before returning to his native New York,he speaks multiple languages, with greatest fluency in English,Spanish, and Danish.  Oh,and his ex-wife is punk singer Exene Cervenko, with whom he has a son.

As my husband put it,"Viggo Mortensen is who James Francowisheshe was."

I can't speak to the artistic merits of Viggo's off-screen pursuits, but I do see him as a kind of anti-Franco in keeping them largely off the public radar.  And while he's clearly driven by a need to express himself via many outlets,he still exudes a sense of some private, fundamentally unknowable core self.  It permeates his screen presence, too, and is part of what makes him so intriguing as an actor.(Well, that plus the rugged Scandinavian good looks and dimpled chin don't hurt,either.)More...

Tweetweek: "I'm not one of your fans!"

You know what's weird?I kind of miss Amy Adams.I was so exhausted by her in recent years with all the Hollywood Report roundtables and the easy awards track even for minor work that was forgotten instantly (Big Eyesanyone?).But the year off as well at that recent David O.Russell confessional has made the heart grow fond again.Funny how that can happen.See also Cate Blanchett's short break some years ago.

Which is why we'll start with Amy for this week's collection of a dozen favorite tweets.Tweets featuringA History of Violence,Carol,Vertigo, political hilarity,Joan Crawford and drag queens areafter the jump...

Beauty Break: "Cinema Without People"

My favorite tumblr of the moment is calledCinema Without Peoplewhich collects images from movies without the characters in them.Sometimes it's a perfect reminder of the skill of production designers, art directors, and set decorators such astheGoldfingerset.

(One of my favorite awards stats is the different ways that BAFTA and Oscar treat James Bond films and BAFTA rightly nominated this one for Art Direction.)

Other times it reminds you of great storytelling, auteur quirks,or the characters themselves through their very absence. It's nearly always haunting and beautiful. The very shy "about"portion of the tumblr simply declares that it was made with love for introvert film fans.I am not an introvert but I can still feel the love.

After the jump10 more images that caught my eye that I just loved...
