Middleburg Farewell: Nicholas Brittel,Greta Gerwig, and "American Crime Story"

Day 1(Darkest Hour),Day 2(James Ivory,Mudbound,A Fantastic Woman) in case you missed them,Day 3(Last Flag Flying)

Ann Hornaday and Greta Gerwig talk after a screening of Lady Bird.photo src

The last moments of Middleburg were a blissful blur that it's taken me a week to recover from. Before I left the splendor of the country at this under-the-radar festival in Virginia,I managed to attend three more events.

Lady Bird
I caught some ofLady Birdagain (one viewing isdefinitelynot enough).Just enough to give me that rush of pre-college feels again before meeting one-on-one with Greta Gerwig. We'll share that interview next week asLady Birdbegins its theatrical release.Gerwig is such a singular actress that we don't want her to give that up (please never leave our screens!) but it's a joy to know that she writes and directs just as beautifully.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Since Middleburg largely takes place at a single resort, there are several panels and discussions in their coziest event space. The last on the menu was a discussion about the forthcoming miniseriesThe Assassination of Gianni Versace:American Crime Storywhich is the second season of that anthology series which began with the Emmy-winningThe People Vs Oj Simpson...

Yes No Maybe So: A Tale of Love and Darkness

Manuelhere checking in with Natalie Portman. We know herJane Got A Gunproject has been battling some sort of curse of bad luck every since it began shooting (after endless behind-the-scenes kerfuffles, itapparentlycomes out next February) but her other project from this year isA Tale of Love and Darkness, her directorial debut.

The film premiered at Cannes to muted (one might say mixed?) reactions. And while it has yet to be picked up for distribution,we finally got a first look at the film in the form of a(n English-subtitled) trailer.Yes,the film is entirely in Hebrew,so Portman (née Neta-Lee Hershlag) gets to show off yet another set of skills, ones slightly less contestable than her ballet-dancing ones.

And so,while I know exactly where I lie,I'm going to go ahead andgive it the YES/NO/MAYBE SO treatment in full.

Portman's Career is Revving Up

Manuelhere to talk about everyone's favorite black swan and share some casting news.Oh,it's also Bike to Work Week and so here's Natalie Portman on a bike to get your Monday started.

She'll probably need it as she's clearly gearing (see what I did there?) for a busy 2015.Not only is her directorial debutA Tale of Love and Darknesspremiering at Cannes (albeit as a special screening selection) but her much-delayed filmJane Got a Gunwill finally be released this coming September, but she's also in Malick'sKnight of Cups(and presumably inWeightless) though it's unclear when either of those films will be in front of us regular moviegoers.

And if these latest casting news pan out, she'll be a busy gal soon (those of us who worries the Marvel Cinematic Universe and/or motherhood would keep Natalie away from us for too long had nothing to worry):

First up,she's apparently signed on to play Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader GinsburginOn the Basis of Sex,which Marielle Heller is in talks to direct. Those of us who haven't yet seenDiary of a Teenage Girl(read Michael's review from Sundance) are dying to see it and we're happy Heller and Portman are in talks to work together. Also,it's about time RBG gets the big-screen treatment,no?

Portman is alsoin talks to star inAnnihilation,a film adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer's twisty sci-fi novel which centers on four female explorers in an unknown place known as Area X.And,true to her career so far,Portman is probably drawn to this film given who's behind the camera:Ex-Machina's Alex Garland (which I've yet to see but I am dying to if only soI can listen to the latest TFE podcast!)

Two promising projects with two promising directorial upstarts alongside many directorial and producing gigs. Are you ready for a Portmanful 2015?Have you readAnnihilationand do you have any thoughts on who should join the all-female cast in its film adaptation?
