TIFF: Foreign Oscar Hopefuls from Hungary & Belgium

by Nathaniel R

On day one of TIFF two official Oscar foreign film submissions, one emphatically weird but kind of irresistible and the other mainstream but lush and erotically charged.

what's that panda doing in her bed?

On Body and Soul(Hungary)
Written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi

Ildikó Enyedi first came to niche fame in 1989 winning the Camera d'Or at Cannes forMy Twentieth Centurythe story of identical twins separated as children who both board the Orient Express as much different adults unaware of the other. The film had a succesful arthouse run in the US and was submitted but not nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars.亚博主页28 years later Enyedi is winning prizes again for another film that concerns doubling...

Foreign Film Oscar Hopefuls with Matthias Schoenaerts & Diane Kruger

We have 10 official submissions for the foreign language race thus far. With the October 2nd deadline looming, expect more news regularly. As a quick reminder or 101 guide for newbies,to qualify for Oscar Foreign Race you have to a) open in your home country theatrically between October 1st of the previous year and September 30th of the Oscar submission year b) be chosen as the submission by your country (only one per country no matter how many films your country makes) and c) be in a non-English language for at least 50% of the dialogue and d) and this is where it often gets tricky...be primarily,on a creative level, from your submitting country. That is to say your cast or crew or at least your director needs to be from the country that's submitting you.

Happy Birthday Cate Blanchett

Murtadahere to celebrate Cate Blanchett's birthday and the Cannes Film Festival simultaneously!

Cannes is all about tradition and protocol.Who walks the red carpet and how they do it,is a big part of its tradition.Only the film cast and crew walk together as their photos are taken.Turn left, turn right, hand in hand until they reach the steps. There they are allowed to walk up separately and that's when the magic happened last year at theCarolpremiere with Cate Blanchett proving what a great movie star she is.

Multiple Cannes moments with Cateafter the jump...

Red Carpet: Best Looks of 2014

Year in Review. Two yummy look backs each day!

Josehere. With awards season underway, and a whole new roster of red carpet superstars about to be born (Felicity Jones,we salute you),it's time to celebrate the absolute best red carpet looks of the year that was, which have us revisit a few familiar faces and welcome the return of old fashioned, ridiculously grand Hollywood glamour!

2014's Best Red Carpet Looks

10.Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren
Nyong'o was the breakthrough star of 2013 with each of her looks besting whatever it is she had worn to the previous event and the celebration continuing on through Oscar night. The MVP was this red column gown with sewed in cape that she wore to the Golden Globes, which made her look like a true fashion superhero.

9.Emma Stone in Thakoon
While pink is usually a big no-no on the red carpet (only SJP and Gwynnie have succeeded in pulling it off in the last couple of decades) leave it to Emma Stone to not only wear two contrasting shades of pink, but also pull off a bare midriff,a side braid and silver accessories (!!!!) effortlessly.Kudos for sticking to a young brand and showing starlets that you can be sexy while remaining almost practically covered.

Felicity Jones,Fan Bingbing, and perennial chart-topper Cate Blanchett comeafter the jump...

Cesar Academy Nominates French President's Mistress!(Who cares about movies anyway?)

Julien, your french correspondent, here to discuss the César nominations.

OUTRAGE !Twitter was in uproar this morning when the nominees for the Best Actress César were announced, and the name Adèle Exarchopoulos was nowhere to be seen. While Léa Seydoux made the cut for her arguably supporting role,Adèle's astounding lead performance inBlue is the Warmest Colorwas relegated to the Most Promising Actress category.

Before you raise your pitchforks, consider this perfectly logical explanation: since Tahar Rahim won both the Best Actor and Most Promising Actor gongs forA Prophetin 2010,the rules were altered so that a single performance can only be nominated in a single category -the one which collects the most votes.Fair enough César, but when a category which is supposed to promote new talent prevents the year's most celebrated performance to be nominated in its rightful place, you're clearly doing something wrong.

All the nominees and a lot of gay drama and political mischiefafter the jump...
