FYC: Salma Hayek in "Beatriz at Dinner"

Before the Oscar's nomination votingends on January 12th,a best actress plea fromJorge...

We're now in a post-Golden Globes time of awards season, where the most open and uncertain race in years has slowly become more solidified. And it seems like the Best Actress category has,if not all five nominees locked down,at least four (Hawkins,McDormand,Robbie and Ronan) that are solidly established.

But there's always a maybe. There's always the possibility of a Charlotte Rampling in45 Years,or a Marion Cotillard inTwo Days,One Night. So today I'm making my case of why this year there should be a Salma Hayek inBeatriz at Dinner...

The Furniture: Beatriz at Dinner in a Tacky Muted Mansion

"The Furniture,"byDaniel Walber,is our weekly series on Production Design. You can click on the images to see them in magnified detail.

Beatriz at Dinneris a film of climaxes, moments of outrage that burst through the veneer of respectability cultivated by the rich and amoral.Beatriz (Salma Hayek),overwhelmed with disgust at a picture of Doug (John Lithgow) and the body of a recently-murdered rhinoceros, throws his phone at him and storms out.Laughing at her principles,he looks at his hosts and asks,"Does she get out much?"

This,of course,is a central irony of Miguel Arteta and Mike White's tightly-wound send-up of American wealth.Doug is the CEO of Rife Worldwide,an internationally-reviled real estate firm. He's a Trumpian nightmare of toxic masculinity and unbridled capitalism, breaking laws and displacing communities as a best business practice. And so when he asks this question,we are reminded that his life is spent constructing hideous monuments to tackiness that replicate a precise vision of high-end living no matter the context...

Box Office: Beatriz at Dinner with Giant F***ing Robots

By Nathaniel R

The opening weekend forTransformers: The Last Knightwas such a huge drop from the series past bows that they might want to use the last film's titleThe Age of Extinctionrather than dumping more billions into keeping this franchise alive.Unless of course its overseas take continues to be ginormous.

numbers frombox office mojo

In other box office news:Wonder Womancontinues to show great legs...and before anyone calls us out for sexism, please know that that's common box office vernacular for insignificant percentage drops from week to week meaning the audience is really into you. This often happens with sleeper hits indicating that word of mouth is keeping them buzzing but it's much much rarer with films that open as big asWonder Womandid. In fact,it's holding so well that it will beat the domestic grosses of DC stablematesSuicide SquadandBatman v Supermanany day nowwhich means onlyThe Dark Knightfilms will have performed better for Warner Bros's DC family.

In limited releaseBeatriz at Dinnerstarring Salma Hayek added 400+ screens to its tiny number and is performing quite well.Paris Can Wait, meanwhile has quietly made over $4 million now  -- impressive. The Big Sick, the new romantic comedy starring and written by Kumail Nanjiani, had the best weekend, though. Its reviews are spectacular and it now has the highest per screen average for any opener this year, taking in nearly half a million on just 5 screens. In a very crowded weekend for platforming films, the audience also showed some interest inThe Beguiledbut not much at all inThe Bad Batch.

Box Office: My "Secretary"Diana and My Cousin Rachel

By Nathaniel R

Universal's attempted monster movie franchise launch didn't go so well. The Mummymet scathing reviews and a disappointing opening weekend. Now,a $32 million launch would be major news for many films but not for a $125 million budgeted feature starring Tom Cruise that is intending to launch a whole "universe".Not everything can be Marvel's Cinematic Universe,Hollywood!

In the absence of a strong competitor and on terrific word of mouth (no small thing),Wonder Womancontinued her reign at the box office.Given a relatively small second week drop (43% while DC's usual superhero sophomore frame drop is 67%) the Amazon princess is looking to join the $300 million club stateside which will put her right up there with Supes and Batman.DC's "Big Three"indeed.
