Review: Brie Larson's "Unicorn Store"

by Anne Marie

WithCaptain Marvelcrossing the $300million mark at the box office,Netflix has capitalized on Brie Larson's booming popularity to acquire her 2017 directorial debut.Unicorn Store is a coming-of-age comedy that happens to also star buddy and co-Avenger Samuel L.Jackson.And while Larson fans will enjoy watching the actress glitter (sometimes literally) across the screen for an untidy 92 minutes, ultimately the star's freshman effort comes off as more style than subsance.

Written by Samantha McIntyre (Married),Unicorn Storetells the self-consciously magical story of a twenty-something failed artist named Kit (Larson),who gets a second chance when she's offered the chance to fulfill her childhood dream...of owning a unicorn. After she fulfills some obligations,of course. The premise is purposely absurd, and for the most part,Larson adeptly navigates between the more magically bizarre scenes of straw-dying and stable-building,and the more quotidian (and creepy) B plot wherein Larson's character tries to prove herself at a temp job with a predatory boss...

Yes No Maybe So: "Avengers: Endgame"

by Ben Miller

Few things in the world are as steady as Marvel movies.Once every few months, one comes in and it is an EVENT.Avengers: Endgameis probably the most anticipated film sequel sinceThe Matrix Reloadedin 2003,and though that didn't go well,it's safe to say that legions are excited again.Marvel still being Marvel, they don't want to give too much away so the trailers have been teaser-like.The new one dropped today,so let's do our patented Yes,No,Maybe So after the jump...

Beauty vs Beast: Liverpool Lovers

Happy Monday,Jason fromMNPPhere with this week's "Beauty vs Beast"-- we'll be wishing one of TFE's favourite actors a happy 33 this week when Jamie Bell celebrates his birthday on Thursday. We love Jamie and are hoping for good things from his turn as Elton John's right-hand-man Bernie Taupin inRocketmanthis spring...and yet we can't help but feel like it's another bridesmaid role. Why won't Hollywood let Jamie shine? He was the lead in the indie crime thrillerDonnybrookwhich came out a few weeks back -- did any of you catch that?

Anyway for this week's poll we're probably dooming his chance to shine, again,by pitting him against one of our most beloved actresses (and one who's in the biggest movie of this past weekend,to boot) -- his co-star in 2017'sFilm Stars Don't Die in Livepool, the queen Annette Bening. This movie got lost in the Oscar shuffle last year, which remains a damn shame -- both Bening and Bell are stunningly good as the dying actress Gloria Grahame and her late-life love Peter Turner. But now you gotta pick!

PREVIOUSLYAnd speaking ofCaptain Marvelstars,Brie Larson might've crshed the box office this weekend but she got her bum handed to her inlast week'sScott Pilgrimpoll-- Ramona Flowers used her crazy big sledgehammer to drum up 64% of the vote.SaidBushwick:

"Can we get these two actresses together again?!Preferably in a film that garners Larson another nomination (and Winstead her first)!"

Review: Captain Marvel

An abridged version of this review was previously published in Nathaniel's column atTowleroad

by Nathaniel R

Captain Marvel‘s "Vers"(Brie Larson) can't remember a thing about her past life. She has only known this: training with her mentor Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) and fighting with her fellow Kree warriors in Starforce.

Their mission is to wipe out the evil shape-shifting alien race known as The Skrulls.Though Vers can't recall her origins,Marvel Studios has their origin template memorized by now,21 films into their world-conquering juggernaut franchise. It'll involve:

  • comic sidekicks (☑️☑️☑️)
  • training sequences (☑️)
  • losing an early battle (☑️)
  • questioning old beliefs (☑️☑️)
  • forming new alliances (☑️☑️)
  • and the hero/heroes finally coming into their own, more powerful than they were before (☑️)

Cue end credits. But we'll get to those in a minute...

Beauty vs Beast: Rock Star Wars

Hello and Happy Monday everybody,Jason fromMNPPhere with a brand new edition of our weekly "Beauty vs Beast"series, wherein we ask you to take a side between a "good"movie character and a "bad"movie character. With Captain Marvel out this weekend let's glance back at one of our fav Brie Larson roles (one of many -- we always love Brie Larson),her small bit as Scott's own ex Envy Adams inScott Pilgrim vs The World. We're facing her off with Scott's current paramour Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead),which might seem unfair given Ramona's in,you know, basically the entire film and has an arc and all that. But don't count out Brie -- she has the best scene in the film, her kick-ass performance of "Black Sheep,"the Metric song.(Watch it here.)

PREVIOUSLYTwas a cake-walk for our favorite Nicky Hoult inlast week's Fancy Tuxedo battlefrom the Oscars -- he black-tied up Joe Alwyn with 77% of your vote.亚博主页But some people said we shouldn't fight at all, likePeggy Sue,who had the answer we were looking for:

"A threesome."
