Remembering Rutger Hauer (1944-2019)

by Nathaniel R

"All those moments will be lost like tears in the rain."

Thus went the immortal words of Roy Batty,inBlade Runner(1982) as he breathed his last, betrayed by the cruel brevity of life.Rutger Hauer improvised one of cinema's all-time greatest death scenes when he was just 38.The actor, who turned 75 this past January, has now passed on,dying at his home in The Netherlands after a short illness.

Rutger Hauer first came to worldwide fame in 1973 as the star of Paul Verhoeven's Oscar-nominated sexually provocativeTurkish Delight(the most successful Dutch film of all time).More buzzy international hits from his home country followed.Hollywood soon came calling as they usually do when someone who can speak English fluently has multiple imported hits...

Q&A: Buffyverse Actors,The Isabelles,Actresses We Don't "Get"

by Nathaniel R

Thisis always so much fun.Why do I go so long inbetween "episodes"?You asked a bunch of questions so here are a bunch more answers.Continue the conversation with your own answers to these questions why don't you?We thrive on community here not just blabberingatyou.

So let's get right to the Reader Qs,shall we?

RYAN T: Just got back from vacation where I visited Italy for the first time.Alas no epic romanceCall Me By Your Namestyle...but it did make me wonder: what are some of your favorite Italian films?

NATHANIEL: I have never been to Italy.AND I have never had an epic vacation romance.I FEEL CHEATED!I could definitely use some boning up on Italian cinema and am happy to take suggestions from all of you.

I'm afraid my answers in this regard are very "basic cinephile"but here are the 8½I'd probably list as my favorites...

Beauty vs Beast: Make News Not War

Jason fromMNPPhere - I didn't take my lead on this week's edition of "Beauty vs Beast"from Nathaniel's "On This Day"postearlierbut it's not a surprise that we'd both want to mark the 67th birthday of William Hurt with an acknowledgment ofBroadcast News, because I think any sane person will snatch the chance to talk aboutBroadcast Newswhen it's offered.I did actually contemplate a couple other of Hurt's performances for a minute - maybeBody HeatorThe Accidental Tourist? But he's made a career of making the women across from him shine and I knew Kathleen Turner & Geena Davis would dominate those conversations...

...as would Holly Hunter, which is also why we're keeping her out of this even though it's Holly's birthday today too.Sorry,Holly! You'd win way too hard.

But does Hurt stand a chance against Albert Brooks' sweaty sidekick Aaron? The film's clearly on Aaron's side,no matter how kind it does try to be to Hurt's pretty boy destined for the anchor's chair.(Can you say Fake News?) Still it's some of Hurt's best work and Brooks,right-sided though he might be,sure can be a bit much,so I ask you...

PREVIOUSLYWe were still riding high onBuffyfumes last week and so we had youface off the show's two best Big Bads, but you should never bet against a Valley Girl God with a taste for the shinier things - Glory stomped that puny human mayor with 60% of your vote.SaidMatt St Clair:

"No contest.Glory.She is the best Big Bad of the series and had all the best lines.

"Did anybody order an apocalypse?"

"There's ice cream and puppy dogs in it for you if you start singing."

"So this is where the Slayer eats,sleeps,and...combs her hair."

Beauty vs Beast: Foes of the Vampire Slayer

Jason fromMNPPhere - I think we can get away with some more Buffy love this week, right? It's 20th anniversary might have been a whole several days ago but seeing as how we made it to 20 years and the internet still cared, and cared deeply (I can't be alone in having had my timeline entirely flooded with Sunnydale Fever),what's a few days?

Thing is we have devoted more "Beauty vs Beast"competitions to the show than any other single piece of entertainment - we've already asked you to choosebetween Spike & Angeland then also to choose betweenFaith & Buffy herself. But if there's one thing the Buffyverse isn't lacking - besides quips, chokers, andXander Harris in a speedo- it's an endless supply of loveable mooks from which to love.So I went with my two favorite villains - Mayor Wilkins (Harry Groener) from Season 3 and Glory "Glorificus"(Clare Kramer) from Season 5.Raise your hand if you're invulnerable...

PREVIOUSLYLast week we said our prayers and sent our souls off to the hell of Ken Russell's making, taking onThe Devils- for a quick minute I thought (my beloved) Oliver Reed might win it but Vanessa Redgrave's masochistically mad nun ultimately raved her way to victory with 58% of the your vote.Saidthefilmjunkie:

"I bought a region-free blu-ray player for the sole purpose of being able to watch this movie and it was worth EVERY penny.I'd love to be able to watch it on the big screen.Of course my actressexual vote went to Redgrave, she really threw herself into this role in a way few actresses could/would have."

5 x 5: Buffy's 20th,Instagram Edition

Manuelhere. One Ms Buffy Summers celebrated 20 years this past week (in her televised incarnation,at least) and I'd be remiss if I didn't add to the celebrations. That plucky Slayer and lover vampires remains my most cherished pop culture icon, infecting and influencing how I think, quip, and write. She even got to me to try my hand at video essays ("The Key to the Hellmouth") and was why I so warmed up to Stephen Dunn's wonderfulCloset Monsterwhich is aqueer descendent of Joss Whedon's show(a character is,after all, named after her).

Back inJuly 2014,for reasons I can't even remember now,I began a silly Instagram project wherein I'd caption all the photos I'd upload on that social channel solely with episode titles from Whedon's show.It became a daily challenge (yes, there was a spreadsheet) and one which only a crazy fan could concoct.Buffy, you see, cannot help but inspire those of us who love her in sometimes absurdly enjoyable ways.

Echoing our (second) favorite slayer and in keeping with Nat's 5x5 theme,I went ahead and chose 5 (out of 140!) Instagram posts to give you a taste of how crazy us Whedonites can be...
