"Love this write-up,and love Southland Tales in all its loopy glory."-Ben1283

"I saw this in the theater with a friend who (like me) has a very high tolerance for obscure, messy film.We both left the screening saying,'What the hell WAS that?' "- RV

After the Coven Comes the Blood

byJason Adams

While we're all sitting on our hands waiting for Timothee Chalamet to hit his mid-20s so they can get around to shooting theCall Me By Your Namesequel already (did you seemy video of author Andre Acimantalking about it?) it looks like film director Luca Guadagnino is finding something else to do,with his hands that is -- Luca has finally (informally) announced what his next movie will be,now that his remake ofSuspiria's out thereknocking our brains and eyeballsfor loops.

It's calledBlood on the Tracksand yes it's called that after the 1975 Bob Dylan record, which will serve as the "inspiration"for the film...

Beauty vs Beast: Sibling Rivalry

Jason fromMNPPhere wishing us all the happiest Lovely Laura Linney Day!Today Linney is celebrating her 54th birthday, which means we're celebrating as well because she's a national treasure that one.But that happiness and celebration might not last long,I ruin everything, because I'm about to force a horrible choice on you with this week's "Beauty vs Beast"contest and ask you to consider choosing between the siblings of Kenneth Lonergan's 2000 sibling masterpieceYou Can Count On Me--Linney's hometown mama and boss-schtupper Sammy versus Mark Ruffalo's home-crashing money-grubbing seatbealt-wearing Terry.Vote and then tell us why you voted how you voted down below in the comments!

PREVIOUSLYLast week'sBest Actor contesthanded Timothee Chalamet a win as sound (to the tune of 87% of the vote!) as his trounced competitor Gary Oldman's eventual win at the Oscars next month is assured,亚博主页so let's just enjoy us getting it right anyway.Saidhepwa(and this is a fine list that I'd love to hear if anybody has any of their own to add to this list, too):

"There are five great young male performances in the past forty years,in chronological order: Dennis Christopher in "Breaking Away",Michael O'Keefe in "The Great Santini",Timothy Hutton in "Ordinary People",River Phoenix in "Running On Empty"and now Timothee Chalamet in "Call Me by Your Name"."

70 Original Songs Eligible for Oscar

Chrishere.Though the conversation around Oscar's Original Song category sways negative these days, there is the potential this year to have one of the strongest lineups in some time. And we now have the massive list of 70 tracks eligible this year to support that claim.

While there are the annual "huh?!"titles among the contenders, the lineup has some strong outsider fare likePatti Cake$,Step, andThe Meyerowitz Stories.Among the things you won't see in the longlist are "I Get Overwhelmed"fromA Ghost Storyor "Cut to the Feeling"fromLeap,as both of those weren't explicitly written for their films. Also two musicals,CocoandThe Greatest Showman, are only eligible for their biggest tracks - however both remain likely players here, though curveballs should be expected in this category at all times.

Let's take a look at the eligible songs/films:

Beauty vs Beast: The Bigger Boys

Jason fromMNPPhere, ready to pop some peach champagne for the release of Luca Guadagnino'sCall Me By Your Name, which finally hits theaters in New York and LA on Friday. The thing is,although I personally have already seen the film six times (if you've been to MNPP at any point in the past three months you're more than aware ofmy obsessionbut if you missedmy first take on the movie out of NYFFit's one of the most meaningful pieces of writing I've ever done, says me),it seems that some of you have not seen the film six times yet.Since it's not in theaters yet,and all.So I probably can't devote this week's "Beauty vs Beast"to it then!

So we'll do the next best and look back at Luca's last movie,A Bigger Splash.WhenABScame outwe polled you aboutthe film it's based on,La Piscine, but I figure enough of you have seen Luca's version by now.I'm pretty certain where you guys will fall when forced into Tilda Swinton's glamourous shoes to choose between the two men in her life, solid wall of Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) and bearded blast of noise Harry (Ralph Fiennes),but I'm asking anyway...

PREVIOUSLYOscar season is here but we devoted one last moment of silliness to Superhero Season bytacklingThor: Ragnarok's two actresseslast week - Tessa Thomspon put up a valiant fight but...well,she was going against Cate Blanchett.Cate took 58% of your vote as bigger-than-Asgard-itself Hela;saidchasm301:

"Do you really think that Cate Blanchett would lose a competition on this website? Her most gif-able performance outside ofCarol(2015)"

London Film Festival: Roundup and Oscar Chances

Pivotally positioned in October, the BFI London Film Festival boasts the distinction of having some of the most feted films of the year, champions newcomers and not without its stalwart festival curiosities. On the ground this year was Film Experience contributorSeán McGovernwho saw only a fraction of the films on offer, but nonetheless a taste of potential Oscar contenders.

Call Me By Your Name
Worried that I would be tranquillised by the hype,I nonetheless could not resist it.Yes,it's a film about gorgeous people of immense privilege, but who can dismiss how hard it is to successfully capture the furtive horniness and confused intensity of young love?Timothée Chalamet's Elio teeters between brazenness and vulnerability, and Armie Hammer captures a strange aloofness that is hard to do on screen. It actually made me want to have children - just so I could grow up and be Micheal Stuhlbarg.

Oscar chances:Director,Picture,Best Actor(Chalamet),Supporting Actor(s)(Hammer,Stuhlbarg),Adapted Screenplay,Cinematography,Original Score.Whether Academy voters embrace two LGBT films in a row is another thing.

Six more films after the jump...
