Who should receive an Honorary Oscar?

Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow in "Shame"Pete Hammond at Deadlinerevealed this morningthat with all the dates moving earlier next Oscar season, the Academy is actually choosing the next Honorary Oscar winners THIS WEEKEND.It's too late then for an FYC but we feel the need to do one anyway. In the past we've made great suggestions like Albert Finney,Doris Day,Neil Simon,Michael Ballhaus, and Marni Nixon but they let all those people die without honoring them which is such bad form.At least they heard us on Maureen O'Hara,Harry Belafonte, and Angela Lansbury!

I have a suspicion that Caleb Deschanel, obviously a well-loved cinematographer given that surprise sixth nomination for the German filmNever Look Awaylast season, will be named this year. He's 74 years old.For some reason I don't think they'll go with Glenn Close quite yet though she's a common prediction. She's 72 but working a lot right now and still in her prime.

TWELVE SUGGESTIONS...

Beauty Break: To Catherine Deneuve on her 75th

TheFrench movie star of French movie stars turns 75 today. She's won two prizes at Cannes, two at Berlinale, and two at the Césars (with 12 additional nominations) in her career that's been as lustrous as the famous golden hair.Catherine Deneuve hasn't been as celebrated in recent years as Isabelle Huppert (who is 10 years younger) but her list of classics, hits, and indelible experiments is long:Belle de Jour(BAFTA nomination),The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,The Young Girls of Rochefort,Repulsion,Mississippi Mermaid, Tristana,Donkey Skin,The Hunger,The Metro(César win),Indochine(Oscar nomination,César win),East/West,Pola X,Dancer in the Dark,8 Women, andKings and Queenamong them.

The last eight years have been quiet but it wasn't so long ago that the one-two-three punch of voice work in the Oscar-nominatedPersepolis(2007 -- she voiced both the French & English versions),an amazing performance in Arnaud Desplechin'sA Christmas Tale(2008),and the delights of François Ozon's comedyPotiche(2010) made an impact...

Beauty vs Beast: Acid Queen

Howdy,Jason fromMNPPhere with our Mother's Day edition of "Beauty vs Beast"- it's maybe becoming a bit cliche to talk about the Alien franchise for Mother's Day at this point...but that's not going to stop me,for two reasons.First off today is the 42nd birthday of the actressCarrie Henn, who played "Newt"in 1986'sAliens-click hereto see a picture of her with Sigourney Weaver a couple of years ago. She's a grown lady!Time is weird, you guys.

And secondly we're doingAlienbecause I got to see the film on the gigantic screen of the United Palace Theater here in NYC yesterday and a million wows.Never have I more envied the moviegoers of yesteryear who got to watch films in these literal palaces.United Palace does a movie screening every month and if you're in New York you owe yourself the experience of seeing something there,it is absolutely grand - see their whole scheduleright here.Anyway we've faced down Ripleys for this seriesonce beforeso this time let's face down her foes!Which came first, the Egg or the Queen...

PREVIOUSLYLast week we sup from the throats of the haute couture bloodsuckersin Tony Scott'sThe Hungerandit was ice-blonde Catherine Deneueve who came out on top to the tune of nearly 80% of your votes - saidthevoid99:

"I vote for Miriam although....my heart and soul will always belong to David Bowie's character in that film.Still not over him."

Beauty vs Beast: Eternal Lust

Jason fromMNPPhere - this week's edition of "Beauty vs Beast"is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Tony Scott's stylish and sexy vampire feast calledThe Hunger, which was yesterday. The film tells the story of the vampire couple John and Miriam Blaylock (David Bowie and Catherine Deneve) and the young doctor named Sarah (Susan Sarandon) that they seduce through billowy curtains.I don't know when I first became aware ofThe Hunger -I'm sure it was awhile after the movie came out given I was only five when it did - but whenever it was I became aware ofThe Hungerthat would also mark the anniversary of my fantasy of being picked up by Catherine Deneueve and David Bowie.I don't say this very often these days but oh to be Susan Sarandon...

PREVIOUSLYSurprising nobody the newAvengersjust broke all of box office records this weekend, but let's not yet forget its immediate predecessor - we've still got the receipts fromlast week'sBlack Pantherpollto count! And y'all broke bad, giving the villainous Killmonger (Michael B Jordan) the win with 55% of your vote.SaidEvan:

"Killmonger,duh.He's ribbed for your pleasure."
