Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Burning Question: Most egregious Weinstein-backed Oscar Nods?

Upon seeing Harvey Weinstein in handcuffsyesterday our friendRob asked a very timely question on Twitterwhich we though we'd share here for rabid discussion purposes.

In the spirit of the day: Which ridiculous Oscar nomination that Harvey Weinstein facilitated was the most infuriatingly egregious?

My personal vote goes to Chocolat's 5 nominations (including Best Picture!!!) in 2000.The fluffy disposable film was nominated over obviously well-liked films likeBilly Elliott,Wonder Boys, andAlmost Famous...and great but divisive films likeDancer in the Darkand.

And though Juliette Binoche is one of the all time great screen actors, there was simply no excuse for that Best Actress nod when Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and Björk (Dancer in the Dark) were both RIGHT THERE,totally inspired, and more than worthy of nominations.Even further outside the race there were still other leading ladies who were running circles around one of Binoche's least impressive performances including Michelle Pfeiffer's genre transcending inWhat Lies Beneath,Renée Zellweger's comic skill inNurse Betty, and Gillian Anderson, all tragic and ravishing inThe House of Mirth!

But what's your answer to the question? And if you are 2000 focused, please let us know you're ideal Best Picture/Best Actress lineupthat year.

Netflix Screengrab Roulette (May 2017)

Just one of these months we'd love a slight surprise and for Netflix to throw a bone at the movie fans they built their empire on.I'm considering cancelling my streaming service and going DVD only -- the exact opposite of what the rest of the world does but Ineedmy movies and,FACT,they just aren't providing them any more.Pickings gets slimmer by the month.Consider that this month they've literally added only two titles made before 2000s,one Bollywood picture andForrest Gump. That is insane and, well, lame. They don't care about movie fans now that they have popular TV shows of their own to produce.

Nevertheless we'll do a screengrab roulette of a few titles.First image that comes up gets posted,no cheating...

Look at these lips. Those are kissable lips."

13 Days Til Oscar: Matthew McConaughey...And the 2000 Best Actress Race?

[The Oscar countdown continues with new contributor Matthew Eng -he wrote that popular Jennifer Lawrence piece!-- making a fascinating cross gender lines comparison to 13 years back]

Thirteen years ago,the only acting prizeMatthewMcConaugheyseemed likely to ever win was a Razzie*.Or,you know,at leasta Teen Choice Award. And yet, here we are, thirteen years later, all thoseWedding Planners andFailure to Launches gone (but not forgotten),andMatthewMcConaughey just so happens to be:

  1. an Oscar nominee
  2. the indisputable frontrunner ofthe Best Actor race, and
  3. a presumable Oscar winner.

It's the Second Coming of McConaughey,a shockingly successful,rule-breaking career reversal that approximately zero people saw coming. But can you really blame us,especially considering that pre-Magic MikeMcConaughey seemed pretty intent on solidifying his status as a Hopeless Hollywood Himbo, continually submerging his skills behind a pair of wide-eyed peepers,a self-satisfied smirk, and a notorious,Southern-fried catchphrase that may have made for one great Matt Damon impression but which can still send even some of the more willing McConaughey converts up the wall?

It's always nice to see a performer sizably step up their game,to start choosing roles for the challenge, rather than the check.Maybe it's the nature of theDallas Buyers Clubrole or maybe it's the inconsistent reputation of the genre he spent the better part of the past decade residing in,but McConaughey's performance and subsequent awards trajectory have been giving me major flashbacks toJulia Robertsand the 2000 Best Actress Race, which culminated with Roberts' inevitable coronation nearly thirteen years ago.[More...]
