Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

This Week's Must Read (s)
Wesley Morris hasan amazing challenging essay about the new ways we discuss artand how they've come to center more on the artist and that person's perceived moral or representational correctness then the quality of the art.  I loved reading this because so much of what he's saying I've seen happening and whenever I tried to put my finger on why it was frustrating me,I couldn't quite locate the target.

The essay also promptedthis interesting discussion at Vultureamong a panel of mostly female critics.I love the point raised that there's a way to discuss art in this new way while also balancing aesthetic discussion but a lot of younger critics haven't been trained in that way or encouraged to learn that skill in the charged political time we're living in.

Smackdown '84: Glenn Close,Dame Peggy,Lahti,Crouse,and Page

Presenting the Supporting Actress Class of '84.The Academy looked way back in time for this vintage collecting characters from the 1920s through the 1940s: a British senior on an excursion to see "the real"India,a Depression era beautician, the ex-girl of a ballplayer, and a former singer working in a factory during World War II.The sole contemporary character was a chain-smoking furious mother from Greenwich Village...

Glenn Close and Geraldine Page were the regulars...about to lose again!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS SMACKDOWN

THE NOMINEES: The 1984 Supporting Actress list skewed more mature than usual.Lindsay Crouse, surely buoyed by the love for Best Picture playerPlaces in the Heart, and the promising new starChristine Lahtiwho was the least familiar face to moviegoers at the time, were the youngest, both in their mid 30s.Glenn Close,on her third consecutive nomination in the category, andGeraldine Pagewith a surprise seventh nomination from a long and revered acting career, were the "names"of the category...and they were both about to loseagain -this time to the stage actressDame Peggy Ashcroftwho had only rarely made films.

Shut-Outs: There was very little consensus about supporting actresses beyond Ashcroft & Lahti who fought it out for the critics awards...

BAFTA & Globe nominees that failed to make the Oscar cut were many: Melanie Griffith (Body Double),Drew Barrymore (Irreconciliable Differences),Kim Basinger (The Natural),Lesley Ann Warren (The Songwriter),Tuesday Weld (Once Upon a Time in America) and Jaqueline Bissett (Under the Volcano);Other key women that voters could have chosen that year: Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters),Elizabeth Berridge (Amadeus),Polly Holliday (Gremlins),Sabine Azéma (who won the NBR forA Sunday in the Country),Holland Taylor (Romancing the Stone),Sharon Stone (Irreconciliable Differences),Dianne Wiest (Falling in Love),Amy Madigan (Places in the Heart) and Lonette McKee (The Cotton Club)

Grace & Frankie E4: "The Funeral"

Put on your finest black Willie Nelson T-shirt,cause we're going to a funeral!

abstew here continuing our coverage ofJane & LilyGrace andFrankie. After being separated from their recently gay (well,to our leading ladies at least) and recently shacked-up husbands, the gals must come face-to-face with their estranged spouses for the first time since the first episode. And because they're of a certain age,the gathering naturally happens at a funeral (it's like clubbing for retirees). And nothing says comedy quite like a funeral setting (unless it stars Hugh Grant and is preceded by 4 weddings) and this episode proves it by carrying some pretty heavy dramatic moments and a breakdown from Martin Sheen that shouldn't have made me laugh as much as it did (since he was actually going for heartfelt drama).

The episode begins with Grace interrupting Frankie's art class with ex-cons so that the two can get to the funeral of their mutual friend Larry before Sol and Robert arrive for their "coming out party".
