Beauty Break: April Foolish Costume Design Predictions

by Nathaniel R

Fantastic Beasts won Colleen Atwood her 4th Oscar. Will its sequel give her her 13th nomination?

The original Mary Poppins lost the Costume Design competition.Could Sandy Powell win it for the sequel?

Even if the year's Costume Design prospects weren't so tantalizing we'd be salivating because we love the artform.Aftera relatively weak previous season, this category has the opportunity to come roaring back for 2018 in a big way.Consider that all four of the Academy's favorite working costume designers (with 43 nominations and 13 wins between them) might be back this year...

Three Fittings: Fantastic Beasts' Odd Costume Win

New Series!Three Fittings celebrates costume design in the movies. The number is necessary self-restraint for we love the art of costuming too much.

By Nathaniel R

Dear reader,I didn't think I'd ever need to seeFantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them(2016).I thought, solid reasoning given the golden trajectory of most franchises, that Oscar would want to move on after a year of regular craft nominations for the series.I thought, surely they'd never hand one of them an actual Oscar if they hadn't done so by now.But in the interest of completism, after Colleen Atwood's generous fourth statue for costuming this particular movie and its bluray release,I caught up.

I was both impressed and utterly perplexed by what I found.

While Atwood does unusually understated work (for her),there are far fewer costumes than you might expect (approximately one per man,two per woman).Sussing out why they voted for this confident minimalism within a fantasy over more traditional costume perfection inJackie, the primary color bliss of then-frontrunnerLa La Land, the erotic glamour ofAllied, and the flouncy Most-ness ofFlorence, proves nearly impossible.

Nevertheless, here are three key looks to discuss:

12 Days Until Oscar - Colleen Atwood, Anyone?

With 12 days until Oscar let's focus on 12 time Oscar nominee & 3 time winner Colleen Atwood for today's trivia post.As first reported on this site, and since echoed everywhere on other sites for years now,one of the most delightful if idiosyncratic Oscar facts is that Ms Atwood doesnotwin the Oscar unless she is competing against Oscar'sother12 time nominee & 3 time winner,Sandy Powell, and vice versa. We thought this endearing stat would be dismantled last season via eitherCarolorCinderellafor Sandy Powell but she lost both bids with her peer Atwood out of the race. This season Powell is sitting one out (she had no films released in 2016) while Atwood returns to the short list withFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Curiously the situations are reversed next year when Sandy Powell returns with two likely sartorial showcases...
