Happy Parker Posey Day!Her 10 Best...

by Nathaniel R

Happy 50th birthday today to the one and only Parker Posey. The 'Queen of Indies' of the 1990s isn't as celebrated these days and, frankly,we could use a lot more of her.So we're eager to read her hilariously titledmemoir(pictured left) which was published this summer.Hollywood has always been a bit confused about her but we're relieved that she didn't just vanish after that first decade of fame (it girl status, indie or otherwise,is by its nature, transitory) but instead forged a patchwork kind of career mixing supporting roles in indies,tv movies, the occasional mainstream feature, and guest starring and recurring characters on TV.She's currently starring in Netflix's reboot ofLost in Space(where she plays the shady Dr Smith) and she's also recently completed filming a new indie calledElsewhere.

For her birthday we thought we'd share a list of her greatest performances.  Posey is such a curiousity that we're sure everyone's top ten will vary immensely,so have at it in the comments!

Disclaimer: I should note that the three most acclaimed performances I haven't seen from her filmography are the indiesFay Grim(2006) andBroken English(2007) and the TV film for which she was Globe nominatedHell on Heels: The Battle of Mary Kay(2002).

Ready for the list?Let's go!

Honorable Mentions: hell, just about everything but wanted to specifically note the following: Rhonda inAdam and Steve(2006),Miami inKicking and Screaming(1995),Debbie inDrunks(1995),Kitty Kowalski inSuperman Returns(2006),and Sissy Knox inA Mighty Wind(2003)

Team Top Ten: Back to School Edition

Amirhere, bringing you Team Experience's latest top ten list.

It's hard to think of a genre that gets less respect than the high school film, but try contemplating a list of the best high school films of all time and a never-ending stream of classics seems to rush forward. That's exactly what our team decided to do this month, and to make things difficult for ourselves,we expanded our horizons to include school films about kids of all ages, from all countries. After all, teenagers aren't the only ones going back to school next week. What about the younger kids?

As it turned out,our team was more enthusiastic about this poll than any we had done before. With more ballots and more votes than ever before, this list was a real hoot for me to compile;and the range and quality of the films that were left off the final ten only serves to highlight the wealth of options at our disposal. From bonafide classics likeSplendor in the GrassandIf…,to influential foreign films likeZero for ConductandWhere Is the Friend's Home?,to more recent films likeElephantandPerks of Being Wallflower,to documentaries likeHoop Dreams, back to school gives everyone with any cinematic taste something to savor. And those are just the stuff that didn't make the cut!Well, those along withGrease,Boyz n the Hood,American Graffiti,Heathers,Wet Hot American Summer,Back to the Future,Dead Poet's Society, and… you get the picture.

So,without further ado...

Q&A Pt.1: Sexy Time,Big Scares,Grace Casting,Favorite Kubrick

As an apology for always taking so damn long with theseQ & A columns,I'm doing two this week, but shorter just so I can get some questions done.I'm glad the feature is so popular so thanks for your patience when your questions aren't selected or delayed a week. Here we go.You asked.I select eight to answer...for now.Part Two in a day or three.

MARK: Do you think the success ofThe HelpandBridesmaidswill get more female oriented films made, black or white?

Sadly I do not. It's actually notthatrare for a female-driven film to become a big success.Everyone in positions of power just has collective amnesia about it the following year or assumes that it's a novelty even though novelty should imply "one off"and not something that occurs pretty much a couple of times a year.;)

KOKOLO: What is your favorite Kubrick film?
I haven't been a completist about everyone's favorite director but mine. But of those that I've seen my preference isThe Shining.I don't like the ending very much but otherwise I love everything about it and I think it's spectacularly creepy. But this could be because I saw it in a spectacularly creepy way for a first time in (wait for it) a cabin in the woods without another house around for miles, surrounded by the pitch black of a forest.I was SO scared. And don't you think that the circumstances in which you first view a movie have a real longlasting impact on you (provided it's a great movie to begin with)?

As for Kubrick in general,I find his films somewhat alienating which I suppose is the point but he's just not a favorite of mine. We're all allowed our off-consensus feelings about "the masters"aren't we?I actively dislikeEyes Wide Shut(1999),hate its faux shocking orgy sequence and cheesy-ass pay cable looking fantasies and the molasses performance beats drive me utterly wild...not in the good way. No,I don't even like Kidman in it very much.I keep meaning to give it a second chance but...every time I see a scene out of context I hate it all over again.I do however worship the opening sequence with Nicole Kidman stripping in front of the mirror.

But because I have never written about Kubrick I will now allow of you to choose one of the following (I skipped ones I didn't feel like writing about) and I will rent and write about whichever one you choose before the end of November.Drum roll...GO!

BIA: Which actresses would you put on a shortlist for this new Grace Kelly movie?

Please god no.We don't need this movie!Unless it's an alternate reality fantasy in which Kelly loses the Oscar to Garland.Hee.But in all seriousness,I did look at my list of actresses in the right age range -- yes I keep age range lists like I'm some casting director!I am an actress nerd.I couldn't come up with anyone suitable - Grace Kelly was 25 at the peak of her movie fame and 27 when she married the prince and retired.[If you're curious some blondes in the 20something age range -- I'm not endorsing them just listing them...

Grace casting,Sexy & Scary movies and more after the jump...
