Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Review: The Secret Life of Pets 2

by Ben Miller (who has small children)

What do we want from a film when it is obviously not for us?If I'm watching an indie about a life experience that's in no way relatable to my own,I can still admire the artistry and the humanity. If I'm watching a film about talking pets specifically aimed at children,I can enjoy it...but what am I supposed to get out of it?Films likeThe Incredibles,WALL-EorWreck-It Ralphare "for"kids, but non-children can enjoy them on a number of levels beyond the bright colors, fart jokes or action sequences. Those films dug deep into issues about family, loneliness and friendship and had an overarching theme to bring everything together in a coherent way.

The Secret Life of Pets 2is not one of those films and doesn't try to be...

Interview: 'Diamantino' directors on queer influences, genre twists, and Pekingese puppies

byMurtada Elfadl

The balancing of many different tones differentiatesDiamantino, which just opened in theaters after a hit run at Cannes last year. It's a satire,an allegory,a rom-com and a fantasy -- all of those things in one yet it all jells.Co-directorsGabriel AbrantesandDaniel Schmidtkept all these different balls in the air. The story is absolutely bonkers.Let's see if we can get it straight with the help of the official synopsis:

Portuguese soccer hunk Diamantino (Carloto Cotta,Tabu) blows it in the World Cup finals,he goes from superstar to laughing stock overnight. His sheltered worldview is further shattered after learning about the European refugee crisis and he resolves to make amends by adopting an African refugee – only to find that his new "son"is actually an undercover lesbian tax auditor investigating him on the suspicion of corruption. From there,Diamantino gets swept up in a gonzo comic odyssey involving cigarette-smoking evil twins,Secret Service skullduggery, mad science genetic modification, and a right-wing anti-EU conspiracy.

This doesn't even include the fluffy giant Pekingese puppies that make the best co-stars.Critics,including this writer, have been in love since the film premiered at Cannes last year winning the Critics' Week Grand Prize. We recently had the chance to speak to the co-directors in New York. The interview has been edited and condensed for clarity...

This wonderful short is directed by Rosana Sullivan and it's traditional animation rather than the CG usual from Pixar. The drawing is so expressive -- how great are the cats eyes?-- and as someone who once adopted a ratty-looking nervous and unfriendly street kitten, this really struck a chord. My heart melted when it learned to make a friend.Perhaps other cat owners or pitbull fans will be similarly moved?

There have been six new shorts from Pixar's new initiative. Here's what they say about this program:

The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows. These films are unlike anything we've ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare."
