YNMS: Top Gun Maverick

We're way behind on movie trailers. So here's another Yes No Maybe So courtesy ofTony Ruggio...

The interwebz collectively threw shade a year or two ago when Tom Cruise,Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy,Oblivion) announced the twenty-years-too-late sequel toTop Gun,complete with some premise about sons and legacies and an aging Maverick.Sounded like the same ol' routine any time a long-dormant brand or franchise suddenly decides to reboot or,in the case ofTop Gun,sequelize for the very first time. It's somethin' else what a good trailer can do...because all of that is here and more in the first trailer which dropped on Thursday, and yet it's one of the best teasers this year...

Who will win the Emmy for Leading Actor in a Drama?

By Spencer Coile

If you were to go back and evaluate the Lead Actor in a Drama Series race from the past decade, you may expect to find a lot of Bryan Cranston for his performance as Walter White onBreaking Bad.Yet,intriguingly, while Cranston won his fair share of Emmy's,this category is more unpredictable than you might expect.

With winners including Kyle Chandler forFriday Night Lights,Jeff Daniels forThe Newsroom,Rami Malek forMr.Robot, and of course Cranston and Jon Hamm forMad Men,Lead Actor is often changing hands. In fact,Cranston is most recent consecutive repeat winner (back in 2010).Will last year's winner Sterling K.Brown break this new one-off trend,or will a new winner emerge...

Months of Meryl: The Hours (2002)

JohnandMattheware watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.

#29 —Clarissa Vaughan,a higher-up and hostess of the New York literary scene attempting to throw a party for her dying friend.

MATTHEW:  Even before Meryl Streep stepped before the cameras as the unraveling hostess Clarissa Vaughan on Stephen Daldry'sThe Hours, the actress already possessed a role in Michael Cunningham's Pulitzer-winning,tripartite meditation on love, loss, and Virginia Woolf.Early on in Cunningham's 1999 novel,Clarissa, while shopping for flower, catches sight of a movie star who may be Streep or Vanessa Redgrave or,much less excitingly for Clarissa,Susan Sarandon emerging from her trailer with an "aura of regal assurance."Streep's ephemeral appearance in what will prove to be one of the most pivotal days of Clarissa's life signifies, quite literally, the sublime;her quasi-cameo is a perfect encapsulation of one of those chance, indirect encounters with a famous face that we use, with varying levels of embarrassment,to distract us from the mundanities of our daily routine,a glimpse of the extraordinary amid the everyday. That Streep the Star, who was gifted a copy of "The Hours"by Redgrave's late daughter Natasha Richardson,is removed from Daldry's film speaks to the many, many excisions that occur within any page-to-screen transfer, but it also informs us that Streep's cinematized Clarissa Vaughan is simply beyond distraction...

I will always appreciate Daldry's version as a rare if principally partitioned meeting of three extraordinary screen stars...

Review: Darren Aronofsky's "mother!"

This review contains mild spoilers from the first half of the film since everything is essentially a spoiler given the cryptic promotions. The review was previously published in Nathaniel's column atTowleroad.

"Baby?"is the first line spoken in Darren Aronofsky's new filmmother!but not its first image. The film begins with a defiant girl burning in a house consumed by fire.Javier Bardem collects a gem from the ashes. He places it on a shelf with other less brilliant but similar gems and we watch as the house restores itself from blackened ash. What to make of this rebirth… or is it a timelapse reversal of the destruction? Are we seeing the future or the past?

Cut to Jennifer Lawrence, waking up suddenly in bed.Where is her husband?

While Lawrence is the star she's a cypher-like presence in this particular film (new for her) a mostly passive figure to whom the action happens...We learn very little about her marriage besides the fact that he is a writer and she spends her time restoring their massive home.

Then a knock on the door…

YNMS: Mother!

Jason fromMNPPhere with our first look at the trailer for Darren Aronofsky'sMother!,or as it's known around these partsThat New Michelle Pfeiffer Movie! The exclamation point in the actual title definitely stands for "That New Michelle Pfeiffer Movie!"at least. It's been seven full years sinceBlack Swancame out (I am pretendingNoahdidn't happen at this point, but perhaps I'll reassess it in another decade) and this feels,at first glance, like similar territory for the director.Watch:

So Jennifer Lawrence is happily partnered with Javier Bardem until Ed Harris and Michelle show up,at which point the walls begin to crumble and swarms of looky-loos come hustling out of the forest?I mean isn't that what happens whenever Michelle shows up somewhere?Let's "Yes No Maybe So"this sucker (and watch me have trouble coming up with the latter two!) after the break...

A Conversation About "Westworld"- Part 1

This week,Team Experience membersLynn LeeandKieran Scarletthave tackled the first two episodes of new HBO sci-fi drama,"Westworld,"which has captured the interest, fascination (or ire, depending on who you talk to) of audiences. Here's Part 1 of the 2 part discussion...

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

KIERAN: Watching the "Westworld"pilot and then the second episode,my immediate reaction—even in thinking that the pilot was relatively strong and an intriguing opening statement to the show—was that these two episodes should be reversed.   I might even go so far as to say that the pilot, with all of its beautifully creepy,world-establishing glory (more on this later) is missable when held up against the power (both narratively and stylistically) of the second episode...
