Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Albert Finney (1936-2019)

by Nathaniel R

We had dreaded this day coming.Albert Finney has passed away at 82 years of age from a chest infection. He'd been battling health troubles for years, which is why the filmography abruptly ends atSkyfall(2012) but what a elegiac blockbuster of a swansong, yes? In recent years we'd repeatedly suggested him for an Honorary Oscar but the Academy rarely listens to our brilliant ideas.Instead he'll retain the sad distinction of being the second most-nominated male movie star never to have received a competitive OR honorary Oscar behind only Richard Burton (Character actor Arthur Kennedy was also nominated 5 times without a win, mostly in supporting, but he wasn't a headliner like Finney). But,as we've often said, awards aren't everything and cinematic legacy is far more crucial. And that,Albert Finney has.He will live on given that impressive filmography filled with rich performances.

Finney wasn't born to a family in showbusiness but was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the 'angry young man' and kitchen sink era of British filmmaking -- he reportedly disliked "snobbery"enough to turn down the British Knighthood the year ofErin Brockovich(2000).Despite humble origins he was a quick success as an actor landing his first professional gigs on stage and TV by the age of 19.At the age of 24 he was an immediate movie star...

by Nathaniel R

One of Hollywood's most important artists has died. The film editor Anne V Coates who won both a competitiveand an Honorary Oscarhas died at the age of 92.Her career began in the editing room of 1940s pictures -- she worked onThe Red Shoes(!!!) -- but it didn't take her long to become a lead editor. Her first lead editing gigs were in British cinema in the early 50s.Her career really came roaring to life withLawrence of Arabia(1962) for which she won her first and only competitive Oscar...

RPDR All Stars 3: E7 - And the Oscar Goes To...

byChris Feil

It was a rough week forDrag Racefans. Not only has this season had an unending barrage of racism and vitriol in the fandom, but RuPaul showed her ass again this week revealing her exclusionary thoughts on trans queens. The whole enterprise, including the supreme leader, needed a post-Snatch Game Latrice Royale table-slamming intervention. If ever there was a time for the show to make essentially zero waves, now was certainly convenient timing.

Maybe it was just aftermath of both Ru's ignorance andBenDeLaCreme blindsiding us with a tectonic shift self-elimination,but this week's episode ofRuPaul's Drag Race All Starswas a relief partlybecauseit was so predictable.Call it the least essential of the season but when the weight of drama has become so cumbersome, this felt refreshingly unburdened and unbothered.I blame the restorative powers of Nancy Pelosi arriving in the workroom to brandish a rainbow bracelet just, you know, because.

This week's challenge was also perfectly timed for the remaining afterglow of last Sunday's Oscars...亚博主页

13 Days Til Oscar: Matthew McConaughey...And the 2000 Best Actress Race?

[The Oscar countdown continues with new contributor Matthew Eng -he wrote that popular Jennifer Lawrence piece!-- making a fascinating cross gender lines comparison to 13 years back]

Thirteen years ago,the only acting prizeMatthewMcConaugheyseemed likely to ever win was a Razzie*.Or,you know,at leasta Teen Choice Award. And yet, here we are, thirteen years later, all thoseWedding Planners andFailure to Launches gone (but not forgotten),andMatthewMcConaughey just so happens to be:

  1. an Oscar nominee
  2. the indisputable frontrunner ofthe Best Actor race, and
  3. a presumable Oscar winner.

It's the Second Coming of McConaughey,a shockingly successful,rule-breaking career reversal that approximately zero people saw coming. But can you really blame us,especially considering that pre-Magic MikeMcConaughey seemed pretty intent on solidifying his status as a Hopeless Hollywood Himbo, continually submerging his skills behind a pair of wide-eyed peepers,a self-satisfied smirk, and a notorious,Southern-fried catchphrase that may have made for one great Matt Damon impression but which can still send even some of the more willing McConaughey converts up the wall?

It's always nice to see a performer sizably step up their game,to start choosing roles for the challenge, rather than the check.Maybe it's the nature of theDallas Buyers Clubrole or maybe it's the inconsistent reputation of the genre he spent the better part of the past decade residing in,but McConaughey's performance and subsequent awards trajectory have been giving me major flashbacks toJulia Robertsand the 2000 Best Actress Race, which culminated with Roberts' inevitable coronation nearly thirteen years ago.[More...]

Happy Earth Day: Actressexual Edition

Happy Earth Day!(It's April 22 where some of you are, still.)

Andrewhere.Isn't it s a shame that even though the earth is made up of so many natural, renewable resources we tend to get so few films about characters who are particularly interested in it?Lawyers, doctors, nurses, writers - those jobs tend to roll of the tongue easily from movie scripts.Environmentalists?Umm,not so much. When you think ofhowto celebrate Earth Day through film there doesn't seem to be a large pool of cinematic options to choose from.Every now and then anAn Inconvenient Truthtype film will appear tackling earth related issues, but it's not just the films completely devoted solely to the earth that telegraph the message of caring for our environment best.Oftentimes,an incidental character trait revealing an appreciation for the earth can do wonders.

Here atThe Film Experiencewe all worship the deity that is Actresses (we're not very picky, good actresses all are welcome) and what better way to celebrate Earth Day,original Mother Earth Day than by recognising three women to celebrate both our Actressexual urges and our love for the Earth which the live on?
