Review: When They See Us

By Spencer Coile

Ava DuVernay, notable for her righteous films likeSelmaand13,is unafraid of holding a mirror up to a culture that has condemned the subjects of her work. Her Netflix limited series,When They See Usis a piece of television that is rooted in the history and the humanity of its subjects.Following a contentious court battle, five boys (all either Black or Hispanic) were convicted of a crime they did not commit.

Accounts of the Central Park Five have been speculated and picked apart for decades, including necessary think-pieces,documentaries,and protests. After all, they were exonerated of all their crimes in 2002.When They See Uspresents the timeline of this case;interrogation to court to their eventual release. These are all facts that a simple Wikipedia search would produce. What makes DuVernay's work so astonishing, though,is the way she imbues this narrative -- one that is deeply embedded in our public consciousness - with traces of anger, and above all else, grace.

Emmy Review: Best Actress,Limited Series or Movie

We've been reviewing Emmy categories.Voting concludes next Monday with the ceremony on September 17th.

by Eric Blume

Entertainment writers have been crowing for a while about this category, claiming that it looks more like a Best Actress Oscar list than it does an Emmy list.  And it's true, this year's six nominees include four women who have already won that Oscar, along with two of television's biggest names.  It's an embarrassment of riches: six interesting, surprising, deep performances from six formidable actors...

Emmy Spotlight - Best Actress in a Miniseries or Movie

byEric Blume

We love our actresses, and the Emmy race for Best Actress,Limited Series or Movie on Sunday night is filled with very good ones.  Let's take a look at who's in the running and who the winner might be.

Kirsten Dunstnabbed her first Emmy nomination in her freshman foray into television for her role as a deluded hairdresser in season two ofFargo.  Unlike Nathaniel,I'm not a huge fan of Dunst, but her work here is probably the best thing she's ever done outside ofMelancholia.  What she pulls off here is a very tricky blend of naturalism and heightened comedy,a dangerous high-wire act that could have fallen flat quite easily...

In Appreciation of "American Crime"

It's a common beliefe that there's a ceiling to how poignant and brutally honest network television can be.The often accurate stereotype is that the hour-long dramas that inspire debate and passion are found on pay or premium cable;network TV is for rote procedurals and other series unwilling or unable to truly push the envelope.

Yet In the month since it has premiered, the second season of Academy-Award winning writer John Ridley's (12 Years a Slave) "American Crime"has been flying in the face of pre-conceived notions about the limitations of network television.[More...]

Throwback Thursday FYC: Felicity Huffman in Transamerica (2005)

Imagine if this came out today.

A lot changes in a decade's time...and I'm not talking about IFC Films no longer ever being in the Oscar conversation (they probably wouldn't even launch a campaign  today).

You can still win Oscars playing transgender characters (亚博主页see Jared Leto) but now it comes with a chorus of disapproval that a trans actor wasn't selected. And speaking love loveOrange is the New Blackbut when are they going to give Laverne Cox something else to do besides sassy oneliners as she plays with someone's hair? She had like only two scenes of any note this season.
