"I saw this in the theater with a friend who (like me) has a very high tolerance for obscure, messy film.We both left the screening saying,'What the hell WAS that?' "- RV

Soundtracking: Bridesmaids

byChris Feil

"Hold On"by Wilson Phillips endsBridesmaidson a high note, both soaring the film to its crowd-pleasing crest and underlining the emotional depths of what we've just watched.Yes it's a film about women leaning on eachother for support in crucial moments, but it's also about the journey out of isolation. But even with all of the pathos,it's still an upbeat experience. You couldn't pin a more appropriate song on the feeling that the film conjures,or for its central journey.

Today in Film History. Meow

It's Father's Day.Happy Father's Day.It's also Juneteenth. The day in which the nation commemorates the end of slavery in the mid 1860s (though like most holidays the actual timeline involves several days and months and years and lots of political manuevering -- seeLincolnand be reminded what a mess governing and policy making and constitutional debates always are).June 19th has another history civil rights event in 1964 with the passing of the Civil Rights Act (seeSelma) so exercize your right to vote in November.People are always trying to deny people that right, and if everyone voted,we'd be in such better shape. Now on to cinema...

On this day in history as it relates to the movies...

Good god, woman.Let it go.1865Dame May Whitty, two time Oscar nominee is born in Liverpool.Remember her all caps obsession with winning that damn flower contest inMrs Miniver?
1905
The first Nickelodeon (an early form of the movie theater) opens in Pittsburgh.By 1910 there are thousands of them and an estimated 26 million Americans visit them weekly. Can you imagine how popular film blogs would be - sniffle. The movies shown in them get longer and longer...

AHS: Freakshow "Massacres & Matinees"

The freaks come out at night. The freaks come out at night.Well, except when there's a curfew in which case they'll do matinees. In Freakshow's second episode, the police have locked down the town at night.Apparently there's no CSI people around to explain to them that that murderous clown, played by theZodiackiller John Carroll Lynch, has mostly been killing in broad daylight.Much scarier time for murders,I think we can all agree.Meanwhile more freaks arrive at Elsa's tent seeking employment (Hi,Angela and Angela's boobs...and I do mean plural),Bette and Dot's rivalry increases  - they share the same body but not the same brain or talents, and Dandy and his mother Gloria meet Twisty the Clown to upsetting results.Neither of them are remotely scared of him which makes the scenes a strange mix of genuinely terrifying and hilarious.

Random Thoughts on The Grammy Nominations

The Grammy Awards are not,as a general rule, anything that merits the attention of The Film Experience but it doesn't mean we can't discuss them briefly as an intermission between Oscariffic posting.亚博主页Obviously I'm rooting for"Call Me Maybe"THEsong of the year and indefatigably fun.And you already know that I wish Record of the Year Nominee"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"was the title of a movie.

But given this blog's metier,we have to focus on movie-related categories first and foremost.

BEST COMPILATION SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA
The Descendants(Various Artists)
Marley(Bob Marley & The Wailers)
Midnight in Paris(Various Artists)
The Muppets(Various Artists)
Rock of Ages(Various Artists)

I've never understood quite what people saw inThe Descendantssoundtrack (ooh,Hawaiian music. How obvious!) but I love the nomination for its fellow 2011 Best Picture nomineeMidnight in Paris.

QUESTION: Will this be the only award outside of the Razzies that theRock of Agesfilm adaptation receives?

SNUBBED: Excuse me but where the hell is theSmashCD?
