Posterized: Michael B Jordan

by Nathaniel R

Photographed by Kayla Reeferfor The New York TimesAny list of the newest generation of exciting movie stars would have to include Michael Bakari Jordan (aka Michael B Jordan),and presumably way up top.The Jersey-raised actor, started young on television as a teen actor with acclaimed work onThe Wire. With a name so reminiscent of a superstar in another field,it felt like a dare; How could he bethatbig for the movies? When he hit his mid 20s,though,the movies came calling to make good on the pop culture connotations of that name. It's been a match made in heaven thus far.

All that said he's been strangely absent from our movie screens since proving his film-carrying charisma so thoroughly with the one-two punch ofFruitvale StationandCreed. But then came 2018 to prove to us that he'd been hard at work all along but movies have their own temperamental calendars and sometimes they all get bunched up together.Four movies arrived in quick succession, one of them likely to be the biggest hit he'll ever have. He's already an Emmy nominee for producing the TV movieFahrenheit 451earlier this year, but the Oscar nomination has to date eluded him. Will that change with theBlack Panthercampaign? We don't yet know though we definitely hope so since it's his second, not his first, nomination worthy role;Oscar was sleeping on that wholeCreedsuccess back in 2015,a movie that was wildly better than it had any right to be given its provenance.

How many of his Michael B Jordan's key movies and TV shows have you seen? The posters are after the jump.

Q&A: Friday Nights,Voice Work,Underseen Gems

You asked some questions.I'm finally answering them. You know how this works. Please do chime in in the comments. The whole reason we do the column is for participatory flavor and that includes a pinch of you!Our Question of the Week which isFriday Night Lightsthemed is,annoyingly, from "Anonny"(how about a name?) so he/she gets to choose our next banner topic!(And how about our current "joy"banner.I put Jessica Lange in it for the first time and no one notices!?)

What is it,a crime? Is it a crime to look at Lange?

Pat Carroll recording UrsulaJAMES: Does the trend now that animated films only use "names"for voice work mean that we'll never see the likes of Pat Carroll again?

That would be among the greatest of cinematic tragedies.Unlike seeminglymanyTFE readers, though,I don't actually share an interest in voice actors getting Oscar nominations. But as with motion capture and the much discussed pioneering case of Andy Serkis,I do think this is where Oscar is really dropping the ball in terms of never giving out special achievement statues.I can't even remember when the last one was -- was it forToy Story(1995) before there was the Animated Feature category?Pat Carroll's work asUrsulais the single greatest voice performance in the history of animation.(Team Experience shamefully put her in only 3rdwhen we took a poll)

The days of specialized voice talent getting prime opportunities like that are gone but there is hope: Pixar uses celebrities sometimes but they don't rely on them exclusively the way Dreamworks and other lesser studios do.And sometimes their "celebrities"aren't exactly household names so they aren't using them for advertising purposes, but because they genuinely love the voice.Wasn'tRichard Kinda great choice for "Bing Bong"inInside Out?

DEBORAH: If you could choose one lesser-known movie each from the 70s,80s,and 90s that everyone should see, what would they be (and why)?

THE ANSWER AND EIGHT MORE QUESTIONSAFTER THE JUMP...

Link-sync for your life!

Silver Screen
Pajibaon the way the media is handling Kristen Stewart's current love life.Somehow I had missed this story (cuz I don't care about celebrity dating) but this is a joy to read.
MNPPApparently this new movieBeyond the Reachfeatures Jeremy Irvine in states of undress for basically the whole movie but all I can think watching him run barefooted in the desert is what I felt watchingAtanarjuat: The Fast Runner sprinting across ice in the nude: OUCH
GrantlandMark Harris on all theWonder Womanmovie creative shuffling, director and script(s):

I use the word "movie"reluctantly because right now,Wonder Womanis certainly not one: It is a release date (June 23,2017),and it is a promise to stockholders (as the third of 10 upcoming connected DC Universe films that are meant, between 2016 and 2020,to show that DC can play on Marvel's field),and it is a recognizable — albeit dusty — title.Right now, that's all it is.It's certainly not a movie in the sense of being an entertainment product that starts with an idea and then results in a script that is good enough to attract a director and stars.

MNPPhas a great costume design suggestion for Ewan McGregor now that he's been cast as Lumiere inBeauty & The Beast
ShadowplayrevisitsSinbad and the Eye of the Tiger(1977) on Bluray.I loved those Harryhausen movies when I was a wee bairn
Cartoon Brewhere's a new contender for Best Animated Feature this year -The Boy and the Beast.Kidding - they don't really like anime and there's no US plans just yet
In Contentionreports from Cinema Con with breathless response to a clip of Johnny Depp inBlack Mass

The Rock with a little TayTayOther Screens & Surfaces
The Snap talks Lip-Synch Battle which is fun if you ask me: the complete Hathaway vs Blunt episode is glorious and The Rock doing Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off"--what has been seen cannot be unseen.Louis Virtel compares it toRuPaul's Drag Raceand finds it considerably lacking.I myself find their goals and souls as shows so different as to only see comparison in the extreme basics (i.e.people move their mouth to other people's recordings)
IndieWireTV's obsession with remakes,revival-sequels (Hello,Fuller House) may well end the Golden Age
PlaybillLily Tomlin wants to do a new one woman show.Yes please.
Boy Cultureremember these Raoul Bova kisses Madonna commercials?I didn't!So cute
EWDaredevilrenewed for season 2 with a slight change in show runners (basically an exit and a promotion)
Comics AllianceAdrianne Palicki and Nick Blood, who play former lovers and badass SHIELD agents may lead theAgents of SHIELDspin-off.Two-part question.1) Since they're the best part of the existing show this side of Ming Na Wen,you sure you wanna hobble your still creatively struggling original?2) You already have a spin off of sorts (Agent Carter) which is better than the original show. Why not pour resources intothat?

Amy Schumer is back
...and it is a glorious thing. Here are two sketches getting attention right now,"Football Town Lights"aFriday Night Lightsspoof as hilarious indictment of rape culture and "Last F**kable Day"guest starring Tina Fey,Patricia Arquette and Julia Louis-Dreyfus on Hollywood sexism and ageism.Cue the think pieces en masse -- never mind they're already all over the place.

Finally...
The Eisner Award Nominations(basically the Oscars of comic books) have been announced and it's a great year for female driven series especially the celebrated title亚博主页Ms.Marvel.I find it strange that they don't have a superhero specific category since comic books have changed so much to include so many types of stories but if you're looking for traditional superheroes Hawkeye,Batman,Daredevil.Elektra, and Silver Surfer were represented in some way or another with a nomination or two.

a page from "The Last Mechanical Monster"Sadly,it's really hard to find solid info about the Eisner Awards. Many webpages are out of date and they don't have their own as far as I can tell so it's difficult to know which series have been nominated previously.Obviously they aren't followes as rapturously as other awards!I'm always personally most curious about the webcomic prize because I always want to do one and I rarely get anywhere (sigh). Those nominations are as follows -- I'm only familiar withNimonabut it's pretty great,so I'll be sampling these others.

Guardianhave you heard this ridiculously whiny Samuel L Jackson story? He'sincensedthat AO Scott gaveThe Avengersa thumbs down.I like AO Scott. The New York Times critic was at my screening and patiently waited in line.NY 1'sNeil Rosenthought himselfwaytoo important to wait and just walked to the front. How do you like them apples?
ScannersJim Emerson sounds off on this same controversy (the Jackson vs Scott thing not Rosen's apples!)

California readers take note: There's a three benefit celebrity-hosted performance ofThe Last Five Yearsin Hollywood this weekend. It's easily one of the five best original musicals to emerge in the last 10 years andyou can buy tickets here.I can't imagine how it will quite work in terms of cumulative emotion with a rotating cast -- it's a two person musical in which the lovers tell their story forwards (the man) and backwards (the woman) simultaneously but it so transcends its gimmick. If you've never seen it,go.If you're not near Hollywood, give the CD a chance if you love musicals.

I use to want to see it made into a movie but it's probably better left untouched since it's so very much a stage piece.

Beauty Break: Taylor Kitsch of Earth

I'll tell you how I feel aboutJohn Carterof Marsthis weekend but since we're midway through the week let's pause for a breath,a sigh, and to absorb the beauty ofTaylor Kitsch of Earth.

He started out as a model and after breaking through as an actor playing Tim Riggins on television classicFriday Night Lights,he proved he could pop on the big screen with his cameo as Gambit in the otherwise execrableX-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now he's getting true showcase parts in blockbuster films.John Carterhits this weekend andBattleshiparrives in the summer.

I readA Princess of Mars(the first in an 11 book franchise, and the basis of this film's plot) when I was a little boy.Literally the only two things I remembered about it as an adult were that:

  1. the green martians had six arms
  2. John Carter and his princess were totally naked!!!

These are the things a little kid commits to memory.Since I remembered nothing else I thought it would be amusing to test my memory and I Kindled "A Princess of Mars"...BEEFCAKE & BOOKS after the jump

Links: Thrones,Ratings, Floridians

Ultra Culturehas a great post on the British ratings board featuring 10 amusing nuggets from their annual report. Conclusion: at least they're better than America's sex-hating violence-loving MPAA.
Boy Cultureis British actor Luke Evans (left) going back in the closet,on the eve of his double-feature blockbuster breakout (The Immortals,Three Musketeers)?Strange story.
Clevelandis very excited to haveThe Avengersfilm and wants Ohio to become a big movie-making draw.Between Ohio and Michigan's efforts, the Midwest is really trying to up the "shoot your film here"game.
Googleinterviews author George RR Martin on hisDance of Dragonstour. It's an hour long but youGame of Thronesjunkies will probably want to give it a listen.
PlaybillThe King's Speechis headed to Broadway in 2012 just as we feared.Ha ha.Not really on the fear part. It's already practically a stage play so it should be fine.
Inside TVMad Menis finally shooting again.Woooohoooo
AV Clubreports thatFriday Night Lightshas won a "program of the year"honor from a group called the Television Critics Association (which I'm unfamiliar with but it's a different group than the Broadcast Television Critics Association).Mad MenandModern Familytook home the regular "drama"and "comedy"series prizes respectively andGame of Thronestook home the "best new series"prize.Congratulations to all.

Finally here is Nicole Kidman on the set ofPaperboyagain.

Whoa Nelly!and by Nelly I mean up and coming costume designerCaroline Eselin, whose previous credits includeDylan Dog: Dead of Night,BallastandLeaves of Grass.Eselin apparently isn't shy about a riot of color...but then this murder investigation drama does takes place in Florida.
