Stream This: Two Mia Farrow Greats,Hannibal (S3),Terminator 5, Etc...

In the effort to stay au courant we'll alternate between Netflix and Amazon Prime for streaming news each week. And we'll freeze frame select titles at random places just for fun and see what image comes up.You know how we do.

LAST CHANCE AMAZON PRIME

Amazon Prime has a far better movie selection than Netflix on a month to month basis but they are officiallythe worststreaming provider in terms of providing dates of expiration on their movies/tv shows.Sometimes the titles don't expire after they're marked for expiration and sometimes they vanish even if they haven't been marked.Sometimes without warning they suddenly cost money when they were once free. And they don't do press releases to announce expiring titles like the other services. So it's all rumors in a way.Butsupposedlythey're losing these titles (among others) at the end of July and they're all worth checking out...

There's no reason why you shouldn't have complete confidence in your chances to come out of this alive and in one piece."

Airplane(1980)
This smash comedy mocked the disaster epic genre and started the spoof craze. That spoof genre peaked early - maybe even here. It's kind of unreal how fast and quick the visual and verbal gags come.

Best of '15: The TV Experience

Dancin' Danhere to take a look at 2015 on the small screen. When I moved to NYC late last year I thought that I would be going to the movies all the time. After all,so many more movies play here than my previous home in the middle of Connecticut! But the sheer glut of movies to see, both old and new, caused a lot of second-guessing and a bit of paralysis, leading to a less robust slate than I had imagined.

But the plentiful offerings of television were there for me in my indecisive, paralyzed state.I didn't watch everything, but I did watch a lot.And these are...

Mission: Impossible - trying to catch up with all the new movies

We've opted to do the home viewing news bi-weekly so as not to clog the feed up with lists of product. Some weeks are awfully spare. But here's what's new or newish on DVD/BluRay and streaming if your TV is big.

New DVD or BluRay
Ant-Man-In which Paul Rudd steals a magic suit and Becomes a Better Man.(Tim's review)
Downhill Racer-The 1969 Robert Redford / Gene Hackman skiing drama gets the Criterion treatement
Fantastic Four-If only it were streaming because everyone deserves the opportunity to see how terrible this is ...without paying for it.My only "F"of the year and that isnota cute play on the title.(Tim's slightly more generous review)
He Named Me Malala-Currently seeking a Best Documentary Oscar nomination.
Maze Runner The Scorch Trials-Please don't tell me that there are a ton of books and they're going to split the last one into two movies
Minions-Despicable Mesure created a monster.Well, millions of tiny yellow pop culture devouring monsters.(Tim on the phenomenon)
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation-one of the year's most enjoyable surprises.Although we shouldn't have been surprised sinceGhost Protocolwas also topnotch.(Tim's Review)
Speedy- Harold Lloyd's last silent comedy gets the Criterion treatment
Ted 2-Mark Wahlberg makes a sequel to his magic teddy bear blockbuster and curiously, despite slobbering all over the first one,no one cared

TV Seasons
Hannibal(S3 Final) in which Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen draw bloody hearts around each other's names in their notebooks
Extant(S2 Final) Can someone please stop the casting of Halle Berry in genre fare.Genre acting is not remotely within her acting skill set.Ladies and gentlemen,I present as evidence:X-Menfranchise,Catwoman,and S1 ofExtant.I rest my case.
Transparent(S2 on Amazon Prime Streaming) In which we return to the emotional chaos of the Pfefferman children and their trans father Maura (birth name Mort) played by Emmy-winning Jeffrey Tambor.Have you watched S2 yet?I'm trying to slowly savor it after loving every second of Season 1.

The endearing emotionally slippery family of Transparent

New Streaming on Netflix
Phoenix- One of the biggest German hits in recent years.Weird that they didn't submit it for Oscars last year instead of亚博主页Beloved Sisters.Read Jose's Nina Hoss interview
The Ridiculous Six-- the first film in Netflix's mega multi-picture deal with Adam Sandler
Tangerine- the best comedy of 2015,regardless of what the Globes or Critics Choice claim.Watch it with friends and donuts over Christmas. You'll be so on trend.(Nathaniel's Review)
Xenia- Greece's LGBT Oscar submission about two brothers searching for their birth father

Three Hannibals

At some point in the long heated competition between actors for statues each year, someone somewhere will bring up the apples and oranges factor. How do you compare what Actor #5 is doing in movie A aboutThisversus what Actor #3 is asked to achieve in movie Z aboutThat?Which is why this video of three men playing the same exact scene in different films versions of the Hannibal Lecter novel "Red Dragon"is so fascinating.

Any observations?

Cinematically Insanelooks at the changes at TCM and what that might mean down the road.I'm so wary of this because even if they rebrand to be less about "old"movies then agreed upon "greats"how will we see the really old movies that are harder and harder to find with the death of DVD?I know I'm not alone among cinephiles in the desire to see less-than-great films regularly so as to get context for a career (director or actor) or timeframe at the movies
/Filmswarns you about all the films leaving Netflix in September.(I'm so glad i never gave up my dvds since the range of their streaming options get grosser and grosser beyond their original content)

Guardians Up,Captain Down at the Saturn Awards

The Saturn Awards, which began in the 1970s,get increasingly more confusing each decade. When they first began they were very sci-fi/fantasy niche and now they regularly seem to honor films that don't have anything at all to do with once geeky now mainstream genres like that.Consider that they have nine best picture type categories and they're expansive enough in their definitions that at least half of Oscar's Best Picture nominees were nominated for something andWhiplashandThe Theory of Everythingeven get to be Best Film winners -- neither of which seem at all "genre"though I supposeThe Theory ofEverythingis kinda cosmic in that it has a genre icon in Stephen Hawkings as its subject.

The big winners at the annual event wereInterstellarandGuardians of the Galaxy. The big loser wasCaptain America: Winter Soldierwhich had the most nominations of all (11) and managed to lose them each one.Complete list of winners after the jump...
