Just this weekend we loved you all anew forthat robust conversation about worthy Honorary Oscar recipients.News broke yesterday that the Board of Governors has named the four 2019 recipients.Honorary Oscars will go to the actor亚博主页Wes Studi(who many thought should have been nominated forLast of the Mohicansin 1992,his starmaking role),and two previously nominated directors,David Lynch(who we've been campaigning for) andLina Wertmüllerwho was famously the first woman ever nominated for the directing Oscar forher total masterpieceSeven Beauties.In addition to those three artists,the actressGeena Daviswill receive this year's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.That's a special subdivision of the Honorary that's not actually about the movies but your "outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes"...

Who should receive an Honorary Oscar?

Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow in "Shame"Pete Hammond at Deadlinerevealed this morningthat with all the dates moving earlier next Oscar season,the Academy is actually choosing the next Honorary Oscar winners THIS WEEKEND.It's too late then for an FYC but we feel the need to do one anyway.In the past we've made great suggestions like Albert Finney,Doris Day,Neil Simon,Michael Ballhaus,and Marni Nixon but they let all those people die without honoring them which is such bad form.At least they heard us on Maureen O'Hara,Harry Belafonte,and Angela Lansbury!

I have a suspicion that Caleb Deschanel,obviously a well-loved cinematographer given that surprise sixth nomination for the German filmNever Look Awaylast season,will be named this year.He's 74 years old.For some reason I don't think they'll go with Glenn Close quite yet though she's a common prediction.She's 72 but working a lot right now and still in her prime.

Viola Davis has regrets about 'The Help'

Viola Davis has some regrets about her Oscar-nominated performance inThe Help(2011).In the film she played Aibileen Clark one of several black maids - along with Oscar winner Octavia Spencer - interviewed by a young white journalist (Emma Stone) who's writing a book about the racism and prejudice they faced in 1960s Mississippi.At the time the film faced criticism of having a white saviour problem.That is,only dealing with racism from the perspective of the white characters and what they do to combat it.

It's a story as old as film,with numerous examples.Some set in the US likeDriving Miss Daisy(1989) and others elsewhere,Cry Freedom(1990),to name just a couple.Davis agrees with that take,telling the NYTimes in a recent interview...

Anne V Coates (1925-2018)

One of Hollywood's most important artists has died.The film editor Anne V Coates who won both a competitiveand an Honorary Oscarhas died at the age of 92.Her career began in the editing room of 1940s pictures -- she worked onThe Red Shoes(!!!) -- but it didn't take her long to become a lead editor.Her first lead editing gigs were in British cinema in the early 50s.Her career really came roaring to life withLawrence of Arabia(1962) for which she won her first and only competitive Oscar...

As you surely know by now the Academy held the annual Governor's Awards last night honoring directors Agnes Varda and Charles Burnett,actors Donald Sutherland,and cinematographer Owen Roizmanwho we've been celebrating here on the blog this past week.The giddiest moment was surely Angelina Jolie and Agnes Varda doing a little dance when the Mother of the French New Wave was presented with her statue,complete with spins and everything.

As something of a surprise to yours truly (did I miss a press release somewhere?) they also honored director AlejandroGonzález Iñárrituwith a special Oscar for an experimental VR project...
