Beauty vs Beast: Saving Private Shakespeare

Jason Adams fromMNPPhere, serenading us "Beauty vs Beast"style - tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of John Madden's Best Picture winnerShakespeare in Love, aka the Oscar win that broke every straight boy's heart.Don't believe me?Go find one and mention howSaving Private Ryanwas robbed and watch the fire and fury rise in their pupils.(I really shouldn't make fun, seeing as they got their revenge in 2005.) But the contest of 1998 films is always a good one to stir up arguments excuse me conversation, and since that's what we're here for...

PREVIOUSLYAlthough of Saoirse love is strong it wasn't enough to tackle the one-two punch of The Green Dress and Briony being a little snitch-monster,and so Keira Knightley's Cecelia took top honors inourAtonementpoll last week, with about 3/4s of the vote.Saidpar:

"In fairness to Briony,i'd do a lot worse if somebody got between me and the housekeeper's son.But I voted for Cecilia cause, damn, that girl had some bad luck."

Monologue: Judi Dench in "Shakespeare in Love"(and at the Oscars )亚博主页

Andrewhere.Jose wasjust talking aboutRomeo & Julietso there's our blogging segueway toShakespeare in Love!Ilovethis movie, despite the less than stellar reputation it's built up since its release 15 years ago.I'd argue that it's the most successfully executed romantic comedy in the past 20 years. Those that claime thatShakespeare in Loveis little more than a bauble often forget that it was penned by one of the finest English language dramatists of the 20th century,Tom Stoppard.Films written by playwrights work well forthis columnbecause playwrights are innately aware that monologues are like great set-pieces to show off the acting craft.Shakespeare in Loveis filled with monologues and sotto voce asides and it's not just because of Stoppard's playwright sensibilities. The very best trick Stoppard plays inShakespeare in Loveis delightfully imping Shakespeare's technique in the film.

But the monologue.Today we focus on that slight, but effective Supporting turn which won the Oscar.
