"I am also a big fan of this show, because of Fincher and the detective work, even if the show skirts very close sometimes to murderer fetish..."-Jono

"I love this show.I binged 7 of the 9 episodes and could have finished but I wanted to savor it a little longer. It's such an engrossing show and beautifully filmed"-Raul

Still shook about "Cats"becoming a movie

by Nathaniel R

Betty Buckley in her Tony-winning role as "Grizabella, the glamour cat"By now you've heard the comic news (oh no wait, they're serious!) that "Cats"is being turned into a movie. The news took me so off guard that I was silent for five days.Cats got my tongue.(I'm sorry). The Andrew Lloyd Webber megahit from the 1980s was based on T.S.Elliott poems and as such it has no real story to speak of.It's basically a very successful song cycle (albeit with only one famous song "Memory") elevated by utter nonrealism in the form of humans pretending to be cats in campy makeup, tights, and acrobatic dancing. It's so hard to imagine as a movie that they made the potential of the making of one into a running joke in the play turned movieSix Degrees of Separation(1993).

Grizabella the glamour cat is the marquee role but,in fact,it's a "featured"role since it's truly an ensemble show...

Brief Takes: Blade Runners,Tennis Stars,Feisty Queens,Fish Men

In an effort to break out of my silence -- October is my favorite month so why has it been so hard?-- micro thoughts on 5 Oscar hopefuls I meant to review but didn't.Whoops.Please to discuss in the comments.

Battle of the Sexes(Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris)
The story of Billie Jean King's (Emma Stone) famous 1973 match with Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) and her efforts to make women's tennis viable in a sexist industry

Capsule
: A timely well-crafted look back to the beginnings of a gender war that's depressingly still raging and asoupçonof queer romance to give it unique personality.Dayton & Faris's light touch is the right choice for this briskly-paced but delicately felt recreation of a pivotal American moment.Emma Stone is perfection as the heroic tight shouldered athlete at the center.Just discussed onthe podcast.B+
Oscar Chances: This one could go either way.Much will depend on how smart Fox Searchlight is at selling it to voters.Though maybe don't bet against Emma Stone returning toBest Actress;she's very burrowed into King's skin but still as sunny as Emma Stone.

Blade Runner 2049,Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool,Victoria and Abdul and the Shape of Water are after the jump

"Orient Express"Teaser Trailer Arrives!

Chrishere. We've been obsessively tracking the developments of Kenneth Branagh'sMurder on the Orient Expresshere at The Film Experience,亚博主页so of course we have to share the first trailer.

One of the open questions for the film we've had about the film was tone - would this be a campy lighthearted romp full of famous faces or a more morbid serious-minded mystery true to Agatha Christie's text? From the look of this first teaser we'll be served something in between. And with plenty of attention paid to each star of this massive ensemble, even if our eyes naturally wander to Michelle Pfeiffer.

In a nifty bit of character introduction,Branagh takes us through the train car and the various characters in one take before giving the big reveal to his Poirot. We're already sold on the film,so we won't do the full Yes No Maybe So.ButTAG YOURSELF as one of the passengers in the commentsbased on your response to this teaser - I'm Daisy Ridley's mildly concerned Governess (that rock anthem coda has me a little worried, friends).
