The Furniture: Magical Unreality in "La La Land" and "Fantastic Beasts"

"The Furniture" is our weekly series on Production Design. This is the first of two columns discussing this year's Oscar nominees.Here's丹尼尔Walber...

At a pool party inLa La Land, Mia (Emma Stone) is granted the unique misfortune of being introduced to a generic Hollywood screenwriter.“I have a knack for world-building,” he says, instantly conjuring spectres of aGame of Throneseconomy.Mia quickly extricates herself, destined for a different man in love with his own talent.

The moment is fleeting, but it peels back the curtain on Damien Chazelle’s own view of world-building and filmmaking. His version of Los Angeles isn’t at all overstated, with the exception of its ever-present automobiles. The characters don’t quite inhabit an identifiable city.Rather, they exist against a backdrop of imagined Hollywood, built from relentlessly colorful skies and busy studio lots...

Three Fittings: Oscar Nominated "La La Land"

by Nathaniel R

欢迎 to "Three Fittings" in which we will celebrate costume design in the movies weekly. The number is necessary self-restraint for we love the art of costuming too much. We'll choose three costumes from a chosen film to discuss.Otherwise each episode would be six thousands words and twenty-five images long.As with Daniel's series "The Furniture," which focuses on Production Design, I'll alternate between contemporary and older films.

Let's begin with one of this year's Best Costume Design Oscar nomineesLa La Land。Contemporary films rarely receive this honor.Out of the 85 films nominated this century thus far for costumes, only 4 have been contemporary films:The Devil Wears Prada, The Queen, I Am Love, and nowLa La Land。But let's state this clearly up front:La La Landdeserved the nomination.

While the guiding principle ofLa La Land's costume design by Mary Zophres is simplicity, this should not be confused for subtlety...

Two silly questions about dressing up and playing house with the Oscar contenders

Okay, one final round of question forTeam Experienceabout the Oscar nominations. We've talked aboutpeople who didn't make the listandthe nominations that delighted us。Now, two burning questions inspired by the Production Design and Costume nominations.

Which production design nominated picture would you most want to live inside?

GLENN:Hail, Caesar!, but only if Tilda Swinton and I find ourselves running around movie studio backlots set to a zippy orchestral soundtrack.I might just sneakily pop intoPassengers' robot bar for a drink when we're done.

DAVID:The moment I saw the ridiculously giant Ingrid Bergman wall inLa La Landis the moment I knew that film was definitely on my wavelength...

Team Experience: Mourning the Snubbed, Pondering the Head-Scratching Nominees

今天早上我调查团队经验的操作系统car nominations. Here are the first two related questions on absences and curious inclusions. We expect your answers to add to the conversation in the comments.

What omission in this morning nominations most upset you?

Matthew: Like everyone else on here, I am devastated, first and foremost, for the outstanding Annette Bening, an exclusion for which I hold A24 accountable. Finally, I'd like to imagine that Pharrell andSing Streetcomposer Gary Clark are off together somewhere getting hammered and slinging insults at the tire-fire that is "Can't Stop This Feeling."

John: The intense excitement at Isabelle Huppert's name being read first, chased quickly by the sad reveal that Annette Bening lost a nomination is a perfect capsule for this Oscar morning...
