Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Beauty vs Beast: The Kindness of Strangers

Jason Adams fromMNPPhere, using this week's brand new "Beauty vs Beast"poll to celebrate the 48th birthday of the great Sofia Coppola, which is tomorrow. We are so lucky to have her!Quite honestly I think the world's been under-valuing her directing career, which's given us one great film after another after another. Her last one,2017's remake ofThe Beguiled,is where we're focusing today -- another entirely under-appreciated one if you ask me.While I've long been a fan of Don Siegel's sweaty 1971 version I consider Coppola's an improvement for how it spins itself off into a gothic fable of female empowerment gone to seed.It feels like a sister film to Nicole Kidman's other movie about haunted folks isolated during war-time,The Others-- seriously,go watch them back to back. That'll be an excellent evening at the movies. But until then...

PREVIOUSLY
Switching over to the Elder Coppola,it turns out it was too tough for us to vote for a war-mongering maniacwith last week'sApocalypse Nowpoll, even when he's played by Marlon Brando -- Martin Sheen's "Captain Willard"managed to score 57% of your vote instead.

Summed up byTom G:

"Shouldn't we NOT be voting for crazy people with too much power?"

Beauty vs Beast: Napalm Mornings

Jason fromMNPPhere with this week's "Beauty vs Beast"-- Francis Ford Coppola's filmApocalypse Nowhas been coming up in conversation a lot lately, and not just because my boyfriend kept accidentily getting the title of Gregg Araki's TV showNow Apocalypsebackwards. The film is celebrating its 40th anniversary this Friday, and besides doing a screening and conversation about the film at the Tribeca Film Fest last week Coppola's putting out what he's calling a "Final Cut"in August,in theaters and on blu-ray.It falls somewhere between the original release and the 2001 Redux cut, apparently. But no matter the cut it's the tension between Captain Benjamin L.Willard (Martin Sheen) and Colonel Walter E.Kurtz (Marlon Brando) that remains the the backbone of the film, and that's what we're investigating today...

PREVIOUSLYTwo weeks back most of us still hadn't seenAvengers Endgame, and now two billion dollars worth of us have. But all that money couldn't help Chris Pratt, wholost the contest against Thanos70 to 30%.Suck it,Star-lord.SaidTom G:

"Just like Jennifer Lawrence ran circles around [Pratt] in Passengers,Brolin literally ran galaxies around him."

Grace and Frankie,Season 3: Return to Form

By Spencer Coile

A good series is not born overnight.Oftentimes, the pilot episode is not indicative of the quality a show might have down the road.Even if it is incredible, the series still runs a risk of running off the rails in subsequent seasons (Desperate Housewives).Still, there is something especially rewarding about a series that, after two lackluster seasons, can come back swinging in its third. And after indulging in half of its third outing,it is safe to say thatGrace and Frankiehas carved out a very unique space for its viwers.

Picking up shortly where season two left off, season three toGrace and Frankiefinds its two leading characters developing their own sex toy business geared toward older women.Of course, this is all easier said than done. After all, they still are an odd couple.Meanwhile, their ex-husbands Sol and Robert, neogotiate issues of retirement, gay culture, and coming out at such an old age.And of course you cannot forget all of their children, grounding all of the "adult"happenings with a strange twinge of immaturity.

But what makes the latest offering fromGrace and Frankiebetter than its previous two seasons?

What to Watch When Your Brain Hurts and the World Makes You Sad

byDeborah Lipp

Professor Spouse and I watch a lot of TV.This is absolutely ridiculous, because our first "OhMyGodWhoIsThisWoman"conversation was about movies. But the fact is,the Professor and I rarely watch movies in the evenings, largely because sheisa Professor. She comes home from school either fried,or needing to grade,or both. These conditions aren't conducive to paying attention to a movie,so we turn on the TV.

Lately,we default to the news, and, while Rachel Maddow is atelevision hero, sometimes the vileness of the current Presidential race is too much for our brains to process. We often watch great TV,which can be challenging and dark. What do we do when we just can't face the challenge? The West Wing.

If you aren't familiar with it,The West Wingwas a political drama that ran on NBC from 1999 to 2006,following the presidency of Democrat Jedidiah "Jed"Bartlett (Martin Sheen) and his staff through two terms...

Grace & Frankie.Final Thoughts & Emmy Wishes

We recappedthe first half ofGrace and Frankieand then abruptly quit talking about it,but since it's been renewed,we should tie this up in a neat bow.As with other Netflix shows in the past likeOITNBandDaredevilit didn't quite engage people in the blogging model as weekly series coverage does despite the fact that it was clear that most readers were watching. The problem,as documented in ongoing media hand-wringing andcultural conversations about binge-watching,is that nobody's ever on the same page.

But on the other hand people do seem to have ended up on (mostly) the same page withGrace & Frankiein terms of its overall quality.More...
