"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Scarlett's Black Widow Dough and 2018's Highest Paid Actresses

I always findForbes annual list of highest paid actressessuspect because when you dig into it you realize the huge sums aren't necessarily for acting but for being spokespersons for various products or fashion houses.Of course that requires the celebrity that comesfromacting hence the fusion of commerce and art. With some mainstays of the list, like Jennifer Aniston who is on it every year, the money is largely for commercials with the films being commercials for her celebrity to keep the commercial endorsement business going. With others the money is largely the frequent hit films (Melissa McCarthy).Franchises definitely help: Cate Blanchett and Scarlett Johansson both made Marvel money this past year,Angelina Jolie's big number is her upfront pay forMaleficent 2,and Gal Gadot's is her sudden cash-in on her new celebrity from helping to makeWonder Womansuch a massive global hit in 2017.

The 2018 list goes like so...

  1. Scarlett Johansson $40.5 million
  2. Angelina Jolie $28 million
  3. Jennifer Aniston $19.5 million
  4. Jennifer Lawrence $18 million
  5. Reese Witherspoon $16.5 million
  6. Mila Kunis $16 million
  7. Julia Roberts $13 million
  8. Cate Blanchett $12.5 million
  9. Melissa McCarthy $12 million
  10. Gal Gadot $10 million (first time on the list)

On the list last year but didn't manage it this time: Emma Watson,Emma Stone,Amy Adams, and Charlize Theron.

If you controlled the world which 10 actresses would be showered with money for 2018?

FYC: Christine Baranski in "A Bad Moms Christmas"

By Spencer Coile

As this year's Oscar race heats up,two performances appear to be our Supporting Actress frontrunners: Allison Janney inI,Tonyaand Laurie Metcalf inLady Bird. These two veterans share more in common than scene-stealing roles in their respective films. They are each renowned television actresses (with 13 Emmy nominations and 10 wins between the two of them). With careers spanning decades and their biggest success arguably coming from TV,there is something deeply satisfying about seeing these two respected television actresses be paid their dues for film as well.

That said, there is another 2017 performance in the same vein that merits some discussion: Christine Baranski inA Bad Moms Christmas...

Half Century Halle (and other anniversaries)

On this day in history as it relates to showbiz...

1040King Duncan is killed in battle and King Macbeth succeeds him.Shakespeare fictionalizes everything later forMacbeth. So many theatrical productions and movies follow.Out damn spot!
1932The 1932 Summer Olympics end. This is the Olympic year when gorgeous Buster Crabbe became a gold medalist (pictured left).Hollywood then snatched him right up for movie serials and action adventure franchisesincludingTarzan The Fearless
1945Japan surrenders during WW II (the six year war will last only two more weeks.) but movie makers all over the world have never stopped telling the war's infinite stories. On that same daySteve Martinis born in Waco Texas. It only takes him another 68 years to get the Oscar he totally deserved

1946Two actor birthdays: Blacksploitation actor Antonio Fargas who became "Huggybear"on TV's popularStarksy & Hutchand Susan Saint James TV ofMcMillan & Wifewith Rock Hudson in the 1970s andKate & Alliewith Jane Curtin in the 1980s
1959Marcia Gay Hardenmaterializes in LaJolla California, presumably already perfect
1963Emmanuelle Béart,Manon of the Springherself, and 8 time César nominee is born in France. On the same day in Los Angeles Clifford Odets dies from stomach cancer. Many luminaries of stage and screen visit beforehand. He came to fame as a highly political playwright (four of his works became movies:Golden Boy,Clash By Night,The Big Knife, andThe Country Girl). He was also fond of the actresses: married to Luise Rainer during her back-to-back Oscar wins and also took up with Frances Farmer -- he's played by Jeffrey DeMunn in the 1982 biopicFrances.
1965Jane Fondamarries director/producer Roger Vadim.Together they cook upBarbarella(1968)which lasts forever unlike the marriage

Halle Berry Instagrammed this a month ago.50 is apparently the new 30 for the extraordinarily beautiful people.

1966SuperstarHalle Berryis born in Cleveland.Becomes the first African-American Miss World contestant twenty years later.Hits the movies 5 years after that with Spike Lee'sJungle Feveras auspicious debut.Happy half century to the Best Actress winner.
1975The Rocky Horror Picture Showgets its world premiere in London. It's the longest running film in theaters since it still shows regularly at many moviehouses around the world for weekly midnight screenings.
1980Dorothy Stratten,a nude centerfold,is murdered by her boyfriend. The story was adapted to screen starring Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts by the genius Bob Fosse inStar '80(1983),the influential artist's last film.
1983Mila Kunisis born in the Ukraine of the Soviet Union.Moves to Los Angeles seven years later and by the age of 11 she's already on TV
1987Can't Buy Me Loveopens in movie theaters. No one could possibly expect that nerdy Dempsey would reemerge years later into a sexy mature leading man that everyone called "McDreamy"

1992Single White Femaleopens in movie theaters
1998How Stella Got Her Groove Backstarring Angela Bassett who still had hers (before she lost it and got it back heyyyy) hit movie theaters
2004The cinematographerNeal Fredericksof sleeper phenomenonThe Blair Witch Project(1999) dies suddenly in a plane crash on location for a film
2009District 9opens in the US,becomes a huge hit,and even goes on to Oscar nominations including Best Picture inone of the most surprising Oscar years ever(since no one knew when the year began that they'd shift to 10 Best Picture nominees and the studios definitely hadn't prepared for it.)

Terminate the Terminator Franchise
Forbeson whyTerminator: Genisysopened weak in the States -- curiously no one ever mentions that Emilia Clarke is not a strong actor and she's up against memories of Linda Hamilton's Oscar nomination worthy work!
The Daily Beastinterviews Alan Taylor (who has not had much luck as a feature director after proving a hot commodity on TV) and he has curious "just go with it"opinions on how messy his movie is
NYTprofiles producer David Ellison (Megan's brother) on his struggles gettingTerminator Genisysgoing and building a multiverse like Marvel. This was a good read but the title is truly bizarre. How is investing solely in mainstream tentpole franchise moviemaking an example of 'not playing it safe.' That's exactly what playing it safe is.Not playing it safe is what Megan Ellison does with her risky art films.

Look,I am one of the biggestTerminatorfans that exists.I saw the first two a ton of times, and think they're veritable masterpieces of their form. They still play today and their action sequences are more exciting (still) even knowing every beat than anything in any of the ill-begotten sequels.Enough already. This franchise was already complete when James Cameron was finished with it twenty-plus years ago.Making money is perfectly fine asonegoal but if it's theonlygoal when making a movie, you've already failed.Movies made solely for money (and for no other reason) are never good.

Are you watchingTrue DetectiveSeason 2?Do you also wish Skynet would stay down after being defeated for the fifth time?

Beauty Vs Beast: Him Freud,Her Jane

JA fromMNPPhere - The Film Experience is taking亚博主页a look back at 1964all this month and so it's the perfect time for our "Beauty Vs Beast"series to take a look at a movie that's turning 50 next month (it was released on July 22nd,1964) and wades so deep into morally murky waters you're never quite sure which end of the screen you're rooting for (if any),making it perfect for this poll - I speak of Alfred Hitchcock'sMarnie.

Starring Tippi Hedren as the titular troubled girl turned to theivery and Sean Connery as the businessman alternately turned on and repelled by that rascally blonde's baser instincts,Marnie's awash in dream symbols (so many snapping purses!) and psychiatry talk - too much of the latter by my count;like Hitch's filmSpellboundI  always find his movie's at their least interesting when they're explicitly spelling out his psychological obsessions.Give me the fluid illogic ofVertigoover it any day.But like the keys and key-holes that clutter every other frame ofMarnie, the film is most interesting as far as the clues it further offers us towards an understanding of Alfred Hitchcock and his never not fascinating psychological profile. It shuffles some not-before-seen puzzle pieces into place.

Hitch was always putting the audience into morally compromising situations, getting us to side with bullies and lunatics - even his most well-intentioned heroes found themselves doing terrible things (think of the scene in the 1956 remake ofThe Man Who Knew Too Muchwhere Jimmy Stewart drugs Doris Day without telling her so he can calm her down).ButMarniefor me is the tipping point in Hitch's filmography where his characters become almost uniformly unlikeable;there's an angriness (or worse,an indfference) to the last decade and a half of his work (yes even in the so-called comedy ofThe Trouble With Harry) - it reaches its apex withFrenzy,a film I find exceedingly unpleasant to watch with its cast of shrewish women and sweaty men (it works as a horror film, but it makes me extraneously sad all the same),but the seeds are planted with Mark and Marnie, two people just a little too damaged and bizarre for me to ever find myself rooting for them in any way.

So why not force us to pick?!

You've got one week to vote and to sell us in the comments on the frigid blonde or the manly man that's come to beat some sanity into her.Choices,oh choices.

PREVIOUSLYAnd speaking of choices, withlast week's poll pittingNatalie Portman's White Swan against Mila Kunis' Black Swan?Y'all couldn't make one!IT'S A TIE,YOU GUYS.428 votes, split perfectly at 50/50.I can't even tell you how giddy that makes me - the movie about doubling and dopplegangers split us right down the middle. We look in the mirror and we seeallof the faces. We are legion.I'll share to two quotes from y'all since we went both ways:

"Nina only cause I don't think Lily would take the loss as hard."--SVG

"Team Lily because that fierce little Russki NEVER would have fallen flat on her ass on opening night.Get your shit together Nina!"--TB

Beauty Vs.Beast: Swan Against Swan

JA fromMNPPhere - it's time for some "Beauty Vs.Beast"yo!We're getting our Aronofsky on this week - I chose to take us back to 2010 for aBlack Swanface-off for the specific reason that today is Natalie Portman's 33rd birthday (Happy birthday,Nat!),and it was only after that I mentally connected it tolast week'sGirl Interruptedface-off- only now, seeing them side by side like this,do the paralells seem striking - two crazy gals feeding off each other's craziness,Winona Ryder talking about oral sex...it's a real double-feature.And I suppose "double"isthe operative word...

So pirouette yourself to one side or the other between now and next Monday, folks!

PREVIOUSLYAnd as for last week's Winona versus Angie showdown,y'all made like the Oscars and gave your love to the big show on the sidelines of亚博主页Girl Interrupted- Jolie took the title with 62% of your votes.Said David:

"She drove poor,fried-chicken-hording Brittany Murphy to suicide in the first 45 minutes and she was just getting started....Angelina Jolie wins this by a mile."
