Great Moments in Horror Actressing: Margot Kidder

"This genre gives actresses some really juicy lines and roles, but denies them the acclaim that comes from more 'serious' roles.Kidder was a gifted actress who was indelible in a few films."-Lady Edith

Sundance: Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling in "Late Night"

The Film Experience has two contributors at Sundance this year,亚博主页Murtada and Abe.Here's Murtada's first missive,on a film that'scurrently closing a record Sundance dealwith Amazon -Editor.

by Murtada Elfadl

Emma Thompson plays legendary late night talk show host Katherine Newbery (think Letterman,2 decades younger,English and a woman but just as famous and revered and still on TV) in the new comedyLate Night.Early in the film Newbery meets a male employee from the writers room who is asking for a raise because he recently had a baby.In two minutes Thompson eviscerates him,and all of the decades of sexism and inequality in the workplace. She likens having babies to having a drug problem that one can't shake. The latter is an unexpected and illogical simile until, that is,you hear it coming out of Thompson's mouth. The writing's funny and sharp, and Thompson is on full throttle hilarious commitment.Late Nighthas a few more of these golden moments, but also a few that are clichéd...

Review: A Wrinkle in Time

byChris Feil

With an authentic sense of wonder for the human spirit in its blood stream,A Wrinkle in Timeadapts Madeleine L'Engle's beloved classic with the air of intense responsibility.Directed by Ava DuVernay, this interdimensional tale of adolescent self-affirmation casts its holistic intentions on a massive canvas that remains deeply personal. It's a CGI space hug resolute in empowering the viewers that find themselves diminished by their environment and maybe evenWrinkle's cinematic contemporaries.

Newcomer Storm Reid plays Meg,a solemn preteen mourning the disappearance of her astrophysicist father (played by Chris Pine) and coping with the cruelty of pretty-girl bullies. Her despair and the naivete of her younger brother Charles Wallace (an adorable and teensy Deric McCabe) summons three otherworldly mystic Mrs.: Reese Witherspoon as the shady and effervescent Mrs.Whatsit,Mindy Kaling as the quote-happy Mrs.Who,and Oprah Winfrey as the all-knowing Mrs.Which.With her brother and a newfound friend,Meg portals across the universe under the guidances of the rescue her father from the evil forces of the invading It that trap him.

"Ocean's Eight" Awaits

Chrishere. While the world is continually bad,one of our sustaining mantras has been the promise of female ensemble heisting withOcean's 8.The main refrain of this meditation / mindfulness exercise is obviously its stars - say their names with me and feel renewed: Sandra Bullock,Cate Blanchett,Sarah Paulson,Mindy Kaling,Rihanna,Anne Hathaway,Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina.

Well done.

We've got a new poster and a photo of the assembled crew to distract ourselves, but even this is just a hint of the fun to come (you can expect a trailer to come very soon, impatient readers).Bullock will be playing Danny Ocean's equally conning sister Debbie,so the opportunity remains for some fun crossover with Steven Soderbergh's trilogy. The film's big heist will take place during the Met Gala and juicy cameos should be expected.Ocean's 12already made a "Julia Roberts pretending to be Julia Roberts"gag, but it would be amusing to revamp the bit here.Rihanna is queen of the Met Gala, after all.

But our new looks are decidedly less fussy than that red carpet extravaganza, with the poster giving us coats and shades mystique and the image below has the team mid-planning.What is Debbie Ocean's octad looking at in their projector? The endless news cycle?Something from the screener pile? The trailer they're keeping from us?Hmmmm.

A "Four Weddings & A Funeral" Revamp!

Chrishere. As Mindy Kaling wraps up the final season ofThe Mindy Project, she is probably about to be on our minds more than ever before. In the next year, she will be in two of our most anticipated movies: Ava DuVernay'sA Wrinkle in Timeand gay oasisOcean's Eight. But she is currently lining up another project to fawn over: a television series revisit ofFour Weddings and a Funeral.

Kaling will executive produce with the film's Oscar-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis for Hulu, and the idea is to craft each season around a different group of friends. While it may seem like yet another revisit for the offing,Kaling has exactly the point of view to make something very special out of this particular reboot. And a rotating cast allows for all different kinds of possibilities for romantic pairings - not to mention Andie MacDowell as different wedding guests / white wine connoisseurs.

Is it maybe time for a reassessment of the original?I admittedly haven't seen it in some time, but it's worthwhile to remember that it ushered in the era of 90s romantic comedies and also was a rare contemporary Best Picture nominee for the genre. And let's not forget the hats!Have you any fondFour Weddingsmemories?
